Still doing some snoring

Post by @raritanman1 » Thu Sep 22, 2022 7:56 am

I have been using the new ResMed machine and nasal pillow mask for quite some time. I have been waking up with some palate and gum sensations (more tickle like than pain) on the roof of my mouth, like a vibration was occurring and some slight redness on the same side of my uvula. My new sleep doc said it was indiciative of some snoring although the sleep report off the resmed website (w serial no. of machine) looks very good he said, with 0.4 snoring events (I forget over how much time).
Anyway, He did say that CPAP is not all precise, and that another sleep test could get to the bottom of the infrequent snoring events that I have (the wife says she occasionally hears me as well), maybe I am taking my mask off unknowingly. I tape my mouth shut w tape to stop open mouth.
What can I do in the short term. I have an accelerating machine, and I turned titration up to 6, have a heated hose...

Thanks

Welcome to the forum!

It would help us help you if we knew exactly which Resmed model you are using. It would also help us help you if you told us the therapy settings on your CPAP machine.

If your machine records the correct data, then there's likely no need for another sleep test: If you look at the data your machine records in the OSCAR software or at SleepyHQ (a website), then that data, particularly the detailed daily data will give us a lot of insight into what's going on and what kinds of things you might want to change in order to eliminate the residual snoring.

Since you are already taping your mouth, you might want to use a piece of tape to tape part of the mask's headgear to your face: That way you'll have a better idea about whether you are taking the mask off in your sleep or not.

I assume that "accelerating machine" means that you are using an APAP--auto adjusting PAP machine. I also don't know what you mean by "I turned titration up to 6". This could mean you have increased the minimum pressure setting up to 6cm? But it could also mean something else. Can you be more specific?

In order to help you, we need to know the following:

Minimum pressure setting
Maximum pressure setting
Is EPR on or off? If it's on, what is EPR set to?
Are you using the ramp? If so, beginning ramp pressure and ramp time

And do you have copies of your sleep studies? How bad is your untreated OSA? Where you titrated in an in-lab sleep test, and if so, do you have a copy of that sleep study?

For what it's worth, the usual "fix" for eliminating residual snoring is to increase the minimum pressure. But without knowing more, there's no way I or anybody else can tell you what minimum pressure setting might work for you.

I had a sleep study done around 10 years ago after a anaesthesiologist before appendix surgery looked in my mouth and suggested it.
I dont have that report, but was diagnosed w sleep apnea by the attending Dr.
I had used a Phillips machine which I got rid of around two to three years ago, and this latest issue and another Dr. suggested teaming up with a Sleep Dr. to manage my apnea.

I saw the sleep specialists recently and they had to insert the chip or card in my machine yesterday, there wasn't one in it before. Like I said, the only report to look over was the one off the ResMed using the serial number.

I will certainly try to include all the info. you had mentioned after my chip records new data and I gather the rest.

I appreciate your response and help.

In case no one has yet mentioned it, sleeping on your back provokes a lot more snores than side or front sleeping... and if you flip to your back when asleep, there are tricks to keep it from happening.

Once the pressure is set properly and the leak is under control, there is no need to avoid back-sleeping. For many people, avoiding back-sleeping is very difficult.
