Did I damage my APAP?
Did I damage my APAP?
Hi All,
I have an Airsense 10 APAP. Last night, I knocked it off of the nighttable and onto the floor. (I've never done this before, by the way!)
I picked up the APAP, put it right side up, and tried to go back to sleep. The APAP kept running, but there was a very loud gurgling noise every time I breathed. It turned out that either when the APAP fell, or when I picked it up and righted it, it had turned over enough that water from the humidifier had gotten into the pump and gotten all the way to my hose.
After I removed the hose and drained it, the machine seemed to function fine for the rest of the night. But I'm worried about what the water might have done to the air pumping mechanism or other innards of the machine.
Can anyone tell me if I did or did not damage the machine?
Thanks,
Andy

Re: Did I damage my APAP?
Generally speaking if the machine seems to run normally now then the water didn't make inside the machine to fry the electronics.
Probably what happened with the overturn was water took the path of least resistance and when from water chamber into the long hose and that's where all the noise came from.
While not totally impossible for water to go into the motor side of things....not nearly as common as it was years ago.
The water chambers or purposely designed to not be so easy for upturned water chamber contents to go into the motor side of things. Instead designed to go to the long hose.
When electronics meet water...you usually know it...either it won't power up at all or there is a god awful noise.
If it is moving air like it should and not making a god awful noise in the motor....it's probably fine.

this reminds of my stint as an admin at sony service center. at one time, sony was running ads showing happy young people cavorting on the beach capturing their precious memories on video tape. this drove our manager nuts. "don't they realize that water and electronic don't mix?!?!".

Re: Did I damage my APAP?
Actually they do mix, but the result is less than satisfying. With the XPAP running unless the air intake was in the water stream, water would not get in the pump, the air flow would Keep the water out of the machine, and blow it into the hose from HH. Re: Did I damage my APAP?
So, there's the blower unit, THEN the humidifier, THEN the hose, so it's entirely possible, especially if it was running at the time, that no water got into the machine itself, that it just got blown into the hose.

Ah, I didn't think about it that way! Thank you, that's very comforting. I thought it was humidifier, then blower, then hose.

I did the exact same thing about a week ago. And sat it back up on the table upside down, lol. It is working fine and seems to have suffered no damage. I have since put some "museum gel" on the bottom so it won't go anywhere.

Re: Did I damage my APAP?
Easy enough mistake to make with the way the air circuit appears to go back into the machine, but if you look in the hole with the chamber out, the left opening goes to the blower assembly, and the right opening is an elbow that goes out the back of the machine.andy88488 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 13, 2022 2:11 pmAh, I didn't think about it that way! Re: Did I damage my APAP?
I did this with my aircurve. I put it in front of a fan and let it dry all day, then plugged it in the next night and it worked. Thank goodness !

Yeah, I took a look at that last night, and sure enough, you are 100% correct. Re: Did I damage my APAP?
I took apart my ResMed Airsense 10 AutoSet apart when I first got it (it was well used, and needed to be de-smelled). There is no way for the water to go from the chamber to the electronics board(s), it would just come out the filter if you were adept at pouring water in there.
It is possible to get water from the humidifier into the motor chamber on a fall with water in the humidifier, but you have to be particularly skilled at doing it. I apparently do have that skill, when my machine came off the stand one night. I shook the machine to get drops out of the motor chamber (never opened it up) and let it dry out for three days while I used my backup machine. I don’t think water ever made it into the motor/blower itself. It runs as well as ever.
