Bad news from Philips

Post by adin67 » Mon Jun 14, 2021 6:02 am

I read the news this morning (here in Europe) and I was shocked; "Philips Recalls Up To 4 Million Ventilators And CPAP Breathing Machines, Including Some Listed As Respiratory Treatments For Covid-19' ...on
businesshala.com/philips-recalls-up-to-4-million-ventilators-and-breathing-machines-including-some-listed-as-respiratory-treatments-for-covid-19/

it would be interesting to know which models are affected :!: :?

Here's a couple links:

https://www.forbes.com/sites/siladityar ... f80cb623a7

https://www.reuters.com/business/health ... 021-06-14/

One thing of interest, there is no mention of ozone cleaning devices contributing to the degradation of the foam.

Here's the actual recall notice and machines affected (from Philips 6/14/21). Read carefully!
This affects U.S. (recalls) and International (field safety notice):

https://www.usa.philips.com/healthcare/ ... src-update

. . . and yes, they mention foam degradation from ozone cleaning devices:

"Philips is recommending that customers and patients halt use of ozone-related cleaning products, and adhere to their device Instructions for Use for approved cleaning methods."

so. it's not that i'm wanting to run in circles and scream and shout. i want to wait for further news to be released.

but isn't this to do with that very degrading due to ozone thing? i remember the hullabaloo about that and thinking that *I* had nothing to worry about because i didn't use an ozone cleaner. is this still the case?

or are you saying it's just the two news links that don't mention ozone cleaning?
people say i'm self absorbed.
but that's enough about them.

Please see my post above. The degradation can come from anything, not just ozone cleaning devices. There are millions of machines being recalled immediately. Follow my link above to the Philips recall.

No...I think this is more than just the "damage that we blame ozone for".
I think it more likely has to do with the type of foam used in the blower units and likely any chemicals used in the production of that foam potentially being a cancer causing agent...or from the degradation of that foam no matter what the reason.
Foam is essentially just a bunch of chemicals mixed together.
If they were only blaming the ozone cleaners their announcement would be more like what ResMed came up with a while back.
They would much rather blame the cleaners than make this announcement...I am sure of that but they didn't. Speaks volumes to me.

  If I were your wife I would be digging the ResMed machine out of the closet....or buying more life insurance for you.

While I am not in panic mode ....yet...the fact that Phillips has taken this really rather huge step does give me cause for a pause in my thinking. No manufacturer wants to make this sort of announcement because they know exactly what the reaction is going to be and it isn't good. I wish I was a little fly on the wall when all this was discussed because I would bet my last dollar there is or was something that alarmed a lot of people. Where there is smoke there is usually a fire of some sort. To me the Phillips recall amounts to "panic mode" reaction....  they sure wouldn't be wanting to do this sort of announcement. Something has scared the hell out of them for them to do it.

Any risk is likely to be very small but even a small risk is a risk and when any risk can be avoided...I want to avoid it whenever possible.
If I am going to error...it's always going to be on the side of caution...always. Hats off to Phillips for essentially doing the same thing.

I foresee 30 separate threads within the next 48 hours. Should commenting be stopped on all but one and that one be temporarily pinned to the Topics index?

Yep....been thinking about doing just that but got to figure out which one as the primary one and merge the others to it which always causes a flow of comments problem that I can't clean up.

Then I have to deal with the people who won't read the sticky....   we both know it will happen anyway.

Maybe I could do a sticky and link to the other threads but lock them???
How about that idea?
When I merge threads it creates a big mess with the continuity of the posts since the posts all get lined up according to date and time.
Makes for following comments being a nightmare.
