I will always respect the wide-scale suffering of animals over taste buds and questionable nutrition.

This sounds like you have never spent time on a beef ranch. Beef cattle are treated lovingly, fed near-perfect diets, always have clean water and have medical checks twice per day. They are social animals and have a good social life 24x7. They lead better lives than most humans on the planet.

Oh, they also die very quick deaths. If you have any experience in human society, you know that the majority of humans suffer, sometimes for long periods and sometimes horribly, before they die.

If everyone were vegetarian, cows would have no life at all.

I have something similar to the Powerbox pictured above because we can lose electricity for days in California when the powers that be (pun intended) worry that electrical lines will spark wildfires. My office is on the hospital grid so it doesn't usually lose power and I can charge it up every day. It gives me some peace of mind to be able to use CPAP every night. When I fall asleep without CPAP the apneas start immediately and disrupt my sleep. I'm thinking of getting a solar panel for re-charging, because when the "big one" (earthquake) comes, my office won't be spared loss of power.

I had a lot of panic attacks at first with CPAP when I was using a FF mask. I spent a lot of time studying how the anti-asphyxiation valve works to help quell my panic that I might suffocate. I'm certain it can't fail. Now I use a nasal mask, and when the electricity has gone off unexpectedly at night I wake immediately, simply from the effort of having to suck in air without the CPAP pressure flow.

If I do indeed have to sleep without my cpap, no real biggie--morning headache,
and dirty looks from everyone disturbed by my high decibel snoring.
Since night temps here have been in negative digits, the biggest concern is enough blankets.

I lived next door to a cattle farm and saw many of those when I lived in rural Missouri. The cries of the mothers when the calves were removed was heartbreaking. Also, there are feed lots that are inhumane and spread disease. As Paul McCartney said, if slaughterhouses had glass walls, there would be more vegetarians.

Nah, not grim, there are vegan versions of most food these days that come without the cruelty of factory farming. Marshmallows, gum drops, and jelly beans are not that high on my must-haves, but YMMV. The longer I'm away from a meat/dairy-based diet, the more healthier I find myself eating and enjoying it. Taste buds do change for the better.

Thanks for the input, those are good points and I may look into a similar setup. I do sometimes wonder what would happen if our electricity is disrupted long-term or the supply chain is disrupted (read too many apocalyptic/dystopian novels in my time).

My yard after a fast moving storm dropped about a foot of cement snow overnight. It’s back breaking to shovel the heavy snow but it sure is beautiful to see the snow clinging to the trees and everything else. After this recent storm I lost power for a grand total of maybe 5 minutes.

I feel for everyone experiencing the hardships the unusual cold snap in the South has brought. I hope they can fix the shortcomings in the power grid this weather has shown exist. It may be an unusual weather event for the South, but the rest of the country deals with far more snow and much colder temperatures on a regular basis with far fewer issues.

Stay warm, hope they get everyone’s power back up soon!
