OT: Miracle--HBOT

Post by chunkyfrog » Sat Feb 13, 2021 8:37 pm

As you may already know, the bullfrog had shoulder surgery on 1/22.
Wednesday evening, he suddenly lost most of the sight in his left eye.
ER, sent home---the following morning he saw our eye doctor, followed by a retina specialist.
12 hours after the initial attack, this last doc gave us hope--sent us to UNMC in Omaha.
They put him into a hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) chamber.
After two hours at 3 ATM pure oxygen, significant improvement.
Six more sessions, most of his peripheral vision is back,
and central vision has gone from black to lighter grays with some shapes.
Full recovery would be more likely had he gotten to the HBO within 4 hours.
Only the THIRD doctor who saw him had a clue about the high pressure oxygen.
IMO, ER doctors should have this information.
My sweet bullfrog dodged a full-on disaster, but I wonder how many others are blind
because of ignorance among those we most trust.

omg, I'm so sorry this happened to you guys, Froggie. That is terrible that the ER didn't know.

Most folks including us with my wife’s cancer diagnosis are driving over an hour down the road to get quality medical services. The drive is well worth it for actual help. Seems to me in our town we only have trainees or doctors just postponing retirement. It is a shame.

Quite a few years ago I had a doctor tell me I had the most unique neurological disorder he has ever seen. Next morning went to another doctor and he looked at my eyes twitching and said let me get you something for that ear. Steroids and cleared up a few days.

I am glad bullfrog got the help he needed.

I worked with a gentleman who was diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension and took medication for it for several years as well as oxygen 24 hours a day. After he retired, he went to a doctor close to where he now lives and was told he did not have pulmonary hypertension, but was severe persistent asthma. Started doctoring him for that, and he is doing just fine without the oxygen 24 hours a day and very expensive medications (insurance was paying $1200 a month for it).

The diagnosis was central retinal artery occlusion, i.e. an ocular stroke.
Luckily, he is among the one person in four who also has a cilioretinal artery,
which may bode well if that artery was not also occluded.
It did not take an hour to drive the 60 miles--our son was driving.

I'm so glad he is better! Did he dodge a bullet... or what! This is something I didn't know!

Gad to hear you got the help he needed in time. Medical help is hit and miss, not every doctor has the training of "Bones" (Star Trek Doctor), you were lucky to run into the doctor that had his answer, and the tools to fix it. Jim

Yikes, what a scary thing!

Glad the hyperbaric O2 worked. It can be a miracle. I had a client who developed osteomyelitis of the jaw after botched dental work and it was the only thing that helped.

Your next adventure will be fighting with Medicare. It's really hard to get Medicare to cover it unless you have one of a list of specific conditions:
