Dirty Hose

Post by archangle » Mon Sep 05, 2011 12:39 am

Have any of you folks ever found anything nasty in your hose? Dirt, slime, mold, fungus? Bad smells? Did you use distilled water, or tap water? What did you do for cleaning before finding the nasty?

I'm a bit fanatical about cleaning my hose, but I've never actually seen anything on the inside of my hose.

Thankfully I havent found anything that you described. Only thing that was in my hose was water from rainout.

The Snake Camera Spy, $99 at:

But I'm sure you can get it cheaper.. May need to back-light your hose, or buy a gooseneck LED lamp..

If you want to get all CSI, then a contrast spray and a UV lamp may highlight those nasty critters.

Typically, I use dishwashing soap, connect one end of my hose to the kitchen tap, turn the hot water on full blast for a couple of minutes. .Let dry a bit, hanging from the shower curtain rod, then blow dry with my S9.

Hmmm . . . what's wrong with this picture?

I use a hose for a year and then replace it. I only rinse it in hot water once a week and let it drip dry. I've never had a problem

Soak it in vinegar for 45 minutes then to the shower it goes with me to take out much of the vinegar smell.
I haven't done this in a long time.

A few drops of baby shampoo and warm water-shaken, not stirred.
Rinse well, dry with old machine.
Don't let anyone tell you the 'universal' hose brush will work with slimline hoses. It does NOT!
It's a she-beast to shove into the hose and equally hard to pull out.
Definitely something I do not want to repeat.

Well, at least the idiot pointing the gun at his buddy's head has his finger off the trigger. I can't tell you how many pictures you see with someone who should know better has his finger on the trigger. No wonder "friendly fire" is so common.

He's holding the gun like a left hander, but I suspect he's just a guy posing and may have never shot the gun anyway.

It looks like the coil of wire for the camera is shopped. It sort of has that "impossible object" look under his hand.

Also, the door is clearly padlocked closed. Exactly what is the guy with the rifle expecting to happen where that's a good position to be in?

Thanks, Mike, that's a good laugh.

Serious answer to the original question posed by archangle: I have found (little tiny) ANTS in my hose and humidifier two or three times and it really and truly grosses me out something awful. And it triggers an instantaneous "DANGER DANGER WILL ROBINSON !!! --- EMERGENCY ALERT CLEAN EVERYTHING THING NOW NOW NOW !!!" feeling in me. Since moving our bedroom upstairs at the beginning of the summer, this has NOT happened to me.

But it is why I take a good long look at the humidifier every morning. And the table where the CPAP is. I don't look at the hose everyday since it's in a hose cozy by Padacheek and it's simply too much trouble to take the hose cozy off every single day. My working assumption is "no ants in the humidifier tank or table" means "no ants in the hose."

I do worry about mold and mildew since we live in an older house with a dark, dank, (and yes, musty) basement that we've had treated for mold in the past.

I soak the pillows in vinegar-water every day (and swap them out).

I soak the hose in vinegar-water once a week (and swap them out---so there's a full week for it to dry inside)

I soak the humidifier tank with vinegar-water every three or four days with a careful inspection between cleanings for ants and other yuckies.
