Post by pharothed » Fri Dec 10, 2004 10:04 am

Hi fellow CPAPers....check out this website:

I'm wondering if this would work in a CPAP, could you put liqure in a CPAP? How about something like nasel decongestent?

Hey, I thought a "Parrot Head" was a Jimmy Buffet fan/groupie.

At least that is what my 33 year old daughter tells me.

That's right! But Jimmy Buffet's most popular hit was Margaritaville.

But I'm just theorizing...

Because that's exactly what we need....something else that disrupts sleep patterns!

Remeber how your sleep study questionaire asked how many alcoholic drinks you have before you go to sleep?

There is a reason that physicians want to know, and it's not that they improve your apnea....

Think it's kinda like sticking a bong attachment onto an emphasema sufferers oxygen bottle, kinda counter productive.

I remember hearing that even light fragrances, for those that want a perfumy CPAP, was not recommended.

Hey Loonlvr.

My daughter is one and Buffet has a new book out. The name of it is "A Salty Piece of Land". We could read it before we "suit up" to go to bed.

Are they coming out with a 12 volt unit you can hook to your car, maybe even a extra hose to share with the state trooper.

My father-in-law the doctor, on being shown my CPAP decided to show me how it was "supposed to be used", put eucalyptus oil in the HH. BLEAAAAAH!!!! (old-school doctor). Took me DAYS to get the smell out, and the HH chamber clean enough to use. "Well that's how they would do it in the OLDEN days", according to him. OK, sure. Maybe if you're treating Eucalyptus Deficiency Disorder (EDD). In his day a CPAP was a bicycle pump, and I seriously doubt he put eucalyptus oil in it.

It DID cross my mind there could be other uses for the machine, depending on what you want to burn in there. Or, anything added to water in the HH chamber would have to itself be volatile. That rules out oxymetazoline, the active ingredient in Afrin. It's a crystalline powder in it's undissolved state, non-volatile, and would not enter the vapor that goes up the hose, and up the nose. There is a strategy for getting nonvolatile substances (like nose drops) into tiny droplets, as a mist, where the material does not need to evaporate. Hence the squeeze bottle thingy. But the CPAP is not good for making a mist of droplets, only water that evaporates will enter the air delivery system. Hmmm... add a "mist-maker" to the HH? It could be done. not a bad idea.

I would imagine any beverage in the HH would deliver the volatile components as efficiently as an AWOL. You would probably have to replace the brandy (or whatever) every day or so after it loses its bite. Turn it around, I wonder if the AWOL on plain air would cure OSA? (Poor man's CPAP). No, I'm addicted to data. I don't see a place to put the SmartCard in the AWOL. bummer. (compliance probably isn't an issue with that crowd). Actually I'm surprised there are no plans for converting a CPAP into a moonshine still. My bet is that somebody has already done it.

I think my first choice is boring boring distilled water. Sorry to disappoint.
