Can someone help me analyze OSCAR data?

Post by knarf » Tue Aug 29, 2023 8:17 am

Hi all, I've linked two days worth of data in screenshots, and I'd love to have some feedback. I typically use my Eson 2.
Do my flow rate waveforms indicate a specific type of problem?

Thanks everyone!

Welcome! For some reason, I'm not able to view your charts using the link. The first one takes me to a blank imgur page, and the second one takes me to a page that says if I continue I may see erotic images. Could you try re-posting?

It would also be helpful to have some context. How long have you been using your machine? What was the diagnosis from your sleep study? And how are things going for you both during the night and during the day?

Actually looks pretty great. Almost no obstructions - so looks like XPAP is doing it intended job.

You might try to understand the causation of your Clear Airway apneas; it could be as simple as arousals from positional changes or the neighbor dog barking.

I'd stop using ramp

I got my machine many years ago but I haven't been able to tolerate using it until recently. I'm always tired during the day, and I become more tired very easily.
During the night I fall asleep pretty fast and don't typically wake up until morning.

My sleep studies are linked below

2018 Initial

2018 Titration

2023 Titration

Note that my 2023 sleep study had surprisingly good numbers, as I remember sleeping way better on that day than I usually would. I was still tired afterwards, although it was not as bad.

Thanks for the welcome!

Sorry for the chart order, I was looking at the guide before I posted but it looked like my ResMed just has a single line for pressure (instead of sampling every 25 seconds) so I swapped the pressure chart with the mask pressure chart. In the future I will just stick to the regular format

Ok, but what about the wave form shape? I saw some diagrams which seemed to imply that my respiratory patterns are abnormal:
https://www.apneaboard.com/wiki/images/ ... lasses.png
https://www.apneaboard.com/wiki/images/ ... 148d1f.jpg
When I'm awake, my respiratory wave forms resemble the Class 1, but after I fall asleep it resembles Class 5, and according to the chart the interpretation is "intensive phasic muscle activity at midinspiration".
My wave patterns when asleep seem to look like Class 6 as well, and the chart says "Marked tracheal traction support during lung inflation". But I'm not sure what any of that means.
Should I be concerned about this?

The way your machine is set up, your spending 45 minutes at mostly suboptimal pressure because of the ramp.

Recommended pressure on the latest study was 10.
You machine is set up at 9.6 - why?

When pressure is too low, more flow limitations appear - those you breathing patterns describe as "abnormal".
Since your machine's is set at lower pressure than recommended by the most recent study, the appearance of those flow limitations is not surprising.

I had issues with falling asleep with the CPAP for the longest time. Starting out with ramp and lower pressures helped me get used to it. Yesterday I tried 9.8 and I'll probably turn it up to 10 today

The Airsense 10 lets you set ramp for Auto - it will start raising pressure when it senses you've fallen asleep.
Try that.

I've tried auto ramp in the past but I've found it mistakenly assumes I'm asleep when I'm still awake.
Also I've been starting to read about Dr. Barry Krakow and his views on using BiPAP and ASV for treating UARS. What do you think about those methods?

Not sure about the cause, but based on looking at the flow rate, it looks like my breathing resumed after the clear airway event as if nothing happened.
Maybe my knowledge is limited but I would almost expect to see hyperventilation after the clear airway event, or some other sign that I'm recovering from the CA event.
But all I see... is just a continuation of my regular breathing pattern :|
Have you found something similar with CA events? Does your breathing pattern just continue as if nothing happened?
