Do I have sleep apnea?

Post by Bunni » Tue Jan 25, 2022 8:35 am

Hello everyone, I'm new here and looking for some help and advice. I am age 46 non smoker and non drinker. I am using CMS50F pulse Oximeter.

Can you guys give me some input if I got sleep apnea or not? thanks

Taking a sleep study is the best way to find out, but you can certainly get some clues if you are daytime tired even though you had a good night's sleep, or if you wake up gasping for air in the middle of sleep. If you're reluctant to jump into the sleep study, there are many sleep/snore apps which can give you a clue. The app places your phone mic into standby and when it detects a noise it starts recording. You can hear if you're snoring heavily or not, and particularly if a no-noise period is interrupted by very loud snoring, loud breathing, or gasping. Hearing that is what finally got me to get help.

How did you score on the Epworth Sleep Scale?
https://www.google.com/search?q=epsworth+sleep+scale

Oximeters can suggest but not diagnose sleep apnea.

There is a relatively inexpensive Home Sleep Test available ($170)
https://www.sleepmedrx.com/partners/cpap

It uses changes in "peripheral arterial tone" to check whether you're being wakened by apneas. It can diagnose obstructive apneas but not central apneas. It's a type 3 test without EEG so it cannot fully distinguish between sleep and wake states.

There is also type 2 home test, which is a full sleep lab test but done at home at $550

My sleep study showed that my O2 levels stayed above 90 the whole night -- but my AHI was 23. Something has gotten you curious about apnea; can you say something about what's going on?

Thank you all so much for your reply, it really is appreciated very much.

I am being concerned when I notice my Summary Report O2 dropped below 88 12 times. Should I be concern?

Some of those drops could be loss of contact artifacts.
Sudden drops and sudden recoveries are usually the pulse ox losing a bit of contact and it needing to reset itself.
Real desats and recoveries normally will take a lot longer.

Pretty sure the first big drop before 21:00 is a loss of contact artifact.
Not sure about the drops after 23:00.

Your desats are highly suggestive of sleep apnea, but as Pugsy points out, it's hard to tell if those were truly desats.

There's one way to find out. . .

A sleep study.

Nowadays there are home tests that are very reliable and reasonably priced. Our host at cpap.com offers a home sleep test for $169 and all it requires is a finger probe smaller than your pulse oximeter) There are more sophisticated devices that can be used at home as well. IMHO, a home test makes great sense because it's in your normal sleep environment and you are more likely to sleep as usual, unless you have something more complex than run of the mill OSA.

Not everyone has drops in oxygen. (Desats)
Other symptoms of apnea are nightmares of running or other strenuous activity,
with multiple awakenings with extreme stress.and daytime sleepiness.
Pray tell, what induced you to test your oxygen levels?

You could talk to your doctor (any kind of doctor, PA, NP, dentist, etc.) about this. If he/she orders a sleep study you probably won't have to pay for it. We never had to pay anything. A sleep study is the only way to determine if you have apnea.

Agreed!
I used the free "Dream Talk" app https://apps.apple.com/us/app/dream-tal ... d445472628 to determine if I was making any sort of gasping sounds in the middle of the night. It convinced me to go to my doc & request to be evaluated for sleep apnea!

[Most do, but it is worth it.]

[Not quite--but it is the best]
Please remember, not everybody has the same insurance.

Ummm, yeah, you were lucky to have good insurance. Most people not on Medicare have insurance deductibles and copays. Especially this early in the year, they might have to shell out $2,500 or more out of pocket before insurance starts to kick in (some have lower or no deductibles, it depends on your individual insurance plan. And some have HIGHER deductibles).

Nevertheless, it's worth getting a sleep study if you suspect apnea--the downstream effects of untreated apnea can be a lot more expensive in the long run--atrial fib, stroke, heart attack, car accident, death . . .
