Need Advice: Can't get a new unit for 8-10 weeks?!?

Post by tps7c » Wed Jan 19, 2022 2:09 pm

Hey Everyone!

I need some advice. I've let my sleep apnea go untreated for long periods of time and I finally had a new sleep study done and they said I had around 34 episodes per hour, and prescribed me with an Airsense 11 machine. Apparently there's a huge backorder on all cpap machines and I'm looking at 8-10 weeks minimum. The price of $767 seems pretty decent, but I'd rather not wait that long if I have to. Does anyone have any other sources of where to get one sooner? ALSO, I have a RESMED S9 which is about 7 or 8 years old that I could start using again. It was top of the line when it came out I think. Is the Air Sense 11 that much better?

Any advice would be appreciated!

Thanks,
Tom

Depending on exactly which model AirSense 11 and S9 you are talking about....if models are the same.
You have to know exactly which model in each to be able to compare.
767 for an AirSense 11....depends on which model you are talking about but that's a darn good price for the AutoSet and about to be expected for the CPAP model. There are 3 different AirSense 11 models out there.

There were several S9 models available.

To compare the 2 we have to know exact model names.

Is the $767 your complete out of pocket price or after insurance paid part? That machine is currently retailing in the $1100 range.

Hey guys! So on the invoice the model says: Airsense 11 Autoset model 39000. It includes the humidifier. $767 seems to be the total price. My insurance deductible is $1500 and I haven't met it, so I have to pay for the whole machine. I have Kaiser insurance and they are contracting with Apria to provide the unit. The ResMed S9 just says VPAP Auto on it. Not sure how to find the exact model number. Thanks!

No need for model number of the S9 VPAP Auto....that is enough information.

As for the 767....you have Kaiser and that explains that the lower than expected price for the AirSense 11 AutoSet.
Actually Kaiser is your DME and Apria is just the go between. This arrangement is different than most other insurance companies and DMEs.

Wonder how come the VPAP Auto was ever dispensed....do you happen to know your prescribed pressure settings?
The VPAP Auto can do some things the AutoSet can't do.

Before accepting the AutoSet I think I would make sure that it can do whatever it is that your doctor prescribes to be done.
Since you have to wait a bit for the AutoSet I think I would just use the VPAP Auto and use OSCAR and see what is going on.

Do you know about OSCAR?

Thanks Pugsy! To be honest, I purchased the VPAP used at the recommendation of someone on this forum. then I uploaded my data from sleepyhead and various people here told me what adjustments to make. Is OSCAR better than sleepyhead? Thanks!

oscar is a continuation of sleepyhead. long story, but one of the developers (the main one?) went a bit nuts about sleepyhead. he was edged out and oscar has continued to develop, taking in new machines and different operating systems.

when you download and install oscar, it will look very similar to sleepyhead. but it's much better in many regards.

also, the developers actually monitor this forum and often help out people who might have difficulty.
people say i'm self absorbed.
but that's enough about them.

If/when you finally get a new AirSense 11 machine OSCAR is already compatible with the new model.
SleepyHead is NOT compatible with the AirSense 11 and won't ever be. There will be no future development of SleepyHead.
Think of OSCAR as an updated SleepyHead. Visually it is very similar as the OSCAR developers started with SleepyHead and moved on expanding and cleaning up prior SleepyHead bugs.

OSCAR is also compatible with your old VPAP Auto already.

There may have been a very special reason it was advised that you give that type of machine a try.
Might be critical and might not be. The VPAP will go higher than the AutoSet in terms of pressure plus it has a different sort of exhale relief that you may have needed. If you were using pressures in mid to upper teens you may have needed the additional exhale relief that is available with the VPAP.
I don't know what was going on back then and that old data is probably gone off the SD card but if you use it for a few nights we will have some current data to work with.

The ResMed S9 just says VPAP Auto on it.
FYI the S9 VPAP Auto is the earlier incarnation of AirCurve 10 VAuto bilevel.

The "AirCurve 11" equivalent has not been released yet.
ResMed is working on it ... https://www.globalcertificationforum.or ... 10289.html
