AHI Target

Post by SleepDeep » Sat Nov 27, 2021 1:57 pm

It is my understanding that an AHI of 5 or lower is very acceptable. My AHI seems to have increased into the 6.5 range. I have read that elevation affects AHI, I live at 1,850 ft.

What AHI result would be a concern?

Your understanding is wrong. While your doctor (and insurance) won't do anything for you if you test with an AHI of less than 5, it's really not good at all.

Try for below 2.

An AHI of 5 means you're having, on average, an apnea or hypopnea every 12 minutes. So it's like having someone sitting next to your bed, poking you with a sharp stick every 12 minutes, all night long. It's probably even worse than that, because the AHI doesn't count other breathing disturbances.

Thank You.

I can't help but wonder how that is achievable from a CPAP device.

Lots and lots of us do it everyday :D

Of course most go up and down on given nights, by 1 or 2, but you should try to be at or under 2 most of the time.

Geepers.
I raised my minimum pressure, AHI went up.

By getting the machine adjusted properly. My *average* for the last six months is 0.27 AHI.

If your pressure is too low to keep your airway open, you'll have obstructive breathing issues, and poor sleep.

Hopefully, you have a data capable machine

The kind of events that compose the AHI is critical to know because not everything gets fixed with "more pressure".

What is your AHI composed of?
AHI is the total of CA/central index plus OA index plus hyponea index?

How much is the central/Clear airway index?
How much is the obstructive apnea index?
How much is the hyponea index?

Index is the hourly average.

If your AHI is primarily central....more pressure won't/can't fix it and might even make things worse.

How's your sleep quality? Wake up often or sleep soundly for the most part?

and here's another question for you-

what is type of cpap machine you have? we'd like to know the entire model name. as palerider has said, we hope it's a data capable machine.

if you have put the name of your machine and mask in your profile before, be advised that the forum software isn't displaying anyone's equipment right now. so please let us know.

once we know if you machine is data gathering machine, we can help you get that ahi down. it's not just a matter of randomly changing pressure. as pugsy points out, your ahi is made up of many events.

and as far as that goes, if you are sleeping okay, maybe now changes should be made at all.

good luck.

i hate you. my 6 month ahi is 0.69!

(not that i'd be able to tell it if i DID have 0.27, anyway.)

I appreciate your input.

I am using a ResMed Autoset10. So that is full data.

Do I sleep well? Simple answer is no. I have a chronic rib injury and some mask leak issues that disturb my sleep. No brain fog or anything like that.

I will organize my Oscar reporting and share it in a few days.
