Respironics Dreamwear difficult exhale

Post by guswah » Sat Oct 09, 2021 3:56 pm

I'm trying out the Dreamwear nasal mask, that is, the one without pillows and only the soft cradle that surrounds the nostrils. Some flattering reviews led me to wonder if it would be more comfortable than the full face mask. But the hurdle I immediately faced was that exhaling seemed hard. No problem getting the inhaled breath, but it felt really unusual trying to breathe out against the flow.

Has anyone else had this issue? I'm wondering if it's a normal thing for those who move from a full face mask to a nasal mask.

No.

It's most likely mental. If you can relax enough to fall asleep, you will probably breathe easily and gently.

The question is why were you using an FFM before. If it was because you couldn't keep your mouth airtight, you may have problems with a nasal-only mask.

Nope, no problem with breathing strictly through my nose. I'm simply not a mouth breather.

Is your exhalation pressure relief on? Have you set your machine for a nasal mask?
It shouldn't be any harder to breathe out with the Dreamwear mask. You might try a different size cushion to see if that helps. Also, try loosening the mask just a tiny bit if it's smooshing your nose. I find that I have to bring the headgear at the top forward a little so that it sits correctly.
