Looking for an inexpensive CPAP for a non-standard use...

Post by wrybread » Tue Aug 17, 2021 2:31 am

I have a friend who makes a lot of fishing weights, which consists of melting lead and pouring it into molds. The fumes are pretty terrible, and I wasn't convinced his mask was doing him much good, so I figured out a system with my CPAP machine: I ordered a really long hose, a new mask, and put my CPAP outside. So when he's pouring lead he's breathing air piped in from outside. It works really well, I can burn incense literally right under his nose and he can't smell it, all the air he's breathing comes from outside.

I'd love to find him his own CPAP machine though, since my machine is much happier living next to my bed. I use a Resmed 10, but I'm thinking it doesn't need to be fancy, just something that provides constant pressure.

Does anyone happen to have a lead on an old cheap machine we can use for this purpose? Maybe an old high hour machine? Doesn't have to be in great shape of course. It's salmon season here in northern Califronia, we could conceivably even trade for some salmon... Or good old fashioned $$ of course.

Thanks for any help!

I wouldn't want to be your friend's neighbor but the fan setup depicted in the video below would be cheaper and simpler.

As a boy of 11, we made lead sinkers out of old sewer pipes, our solution as to open the windows and use a fan, that worked fine for us. ( low tech ) Another would move the operation outside in the open air. No rocket science involved. Occam's razor works best! Jim

Of course if you are in California I'm sure that working with Lead will cause you to die from Cancer or Lung Failure, but I have only spent 4 months in California so I didn't die from it.

If you really want to go the cpap route....take one of palerider's old M series machines off his hands.
Easy to set up...directions on the apneaboard
Respironics REMstar M Series (CPAP or BiPAP): Unplug the power cord from the back of the CPAP machine, then hold down both the left and right arrow keys while simultaneously plugging in the power supply. Once the device beeps twice, release the buttons. After you hear the two beeps, you'll see the word setup in the lower right corner of the LCD screen. When you select setup you'll be in the clinician's mode where you can adjust every feature of the CPAP machine, including the pressure setting.
or with pictures

Depending on where you live in relation to where he lives...shipping/mailing is around 20 to 25 bucks.

Lots cheaper than what the people on craigslist will want for an old dinosaur machine.

I have read here of others using an old cpap while cleaning an oven or shower.
Safety goggles would be totally appropriate as well.

@palerider: I'm interested! Email me at wrybread at gmail dot com?

(And to the folks suggesting using fans and ventillation: of course we do that, but it doesn't work as well as a CPAP, which works 100%. With any other method you're still going to smell the fumes, and lead fumes are not your friend. And the neighbors aren't an issue, the nearest one is about 2 miles away).

Are you saying you don't think it would work? Our needs are pretty simple, just provide constant pressure (and let us exhale). Doesn't need to ramp up pressure, keep logs, or anything fancy like that.

Someone just just being a smart ass and having some fun. You actually DON'T want a later model with foam...there's a recall on the models manufactured after the M series due to potential health problems with the foam in the blower..
unless you hate your neighbor

Whatever model M Series Palerider has (I think the Auto though) will work just fine for what you guys what to use it for.
It actually is a good machine and will do a lot but you guys don't need it for all that anyway.
After it isn't needed anymore to help make fishing lures...put it in the closet and save it. If something should happen to your existing machine and you can't get a replacement quickly.......it will treat your sleep apnea very nicely. It isn't as fancy as your current machine but it actually is a very decent machine.
My first machine ever back in 2009 was the M series Auto...so I am familiar with it.
