problems Exhaling

Post by rubystandingdeer » Fri Aug 06, 2021 8:04 am

:? I have real trouble exhaling and panic. I just got the air fit N20. It leaks, it is painful and not meant for a side sleeper. What else is there that will help me exhale?

The exhale may have nothing to do with the mask. Your machine has an exhale relief setting that may not be on or may not be set high enough. If you are using a Resmed machine, check to see if the EPR (Exhale Pressure Relief) is on and what it is set at.

And Philips machines have something called C- or Aflex.

Impossible to offer anything more than general information without knowing...
What machine (brand and model) you are using????
What pressure you are using?
Are you using the ramp feature?

welcome to the zoo!

we are each different and we don't necessarily use the same brand of cpap and certainly not the same mask. so that's why we need to know which it is you have.

if you have filled out your equipment profile, i'm sorry but it doesn't show up like it once did.

so let us know!

good luck.
people say i'm self absorbed.
but that's enough about them.

This is a common problem for newbies. In most cases, the person is concentrating on breathing. If they can relax their mind, divert their attention from breathing, and let their autonomous (automatic nervous) system take control of breathing, the problem goes away. Once they are asleep, they breathe gently and rhythmically. After all, we breathe all day without thinking about it. No need to think about it when falling asleep.

By all means, take advantage of the machine's exhalation relief feature that others have mentioned.

I could maybe tolerate it better if the mask did not cause to much pain. I need to what mask is better

If any mask is causing a lot of pain then it is either fitted incorrectly or the wrong size.
Most common error made with most masks.....too tight.

When you did your sleep study did they test you for bipap? I can not use a cpap. I can not exhale. The bipap has a lower exhalation pressure setting. I exhale at 1/2 of my inhalation pressure. I felt like I was suffocating. It raised anxiety and panic. After they tried bipap I did better

I use the N20 and am a lifelong side sleeper. If you have any specific questions on the N20 I would be glad to try and help.

I hope the Swift FX will work for you. To see your pressure settings, enter the clinical menu by holding don the round button and the home button at the same time. It takes a few seconds for it to appear.

I have a resmed 10
I have the ramp set at 30 mins
the pressure is set at 4-8
Does this help?

Resmed 10 what? Auto?

Raise the min. setting from 4 to 6 or 7 - no one is able to breathe at 4 (the machine's default low).

Stop using the ramp altogether... you''re spending 30 mins 'ramping up' from the bottom (as above) to... a couple of cms higher at best, and for all that time you're not getting adequate therapy.
Most of us don't use it at all beyond the first week.
