Beer and sleep apnea

Post by Bubba1 » Wed Oct 23, 2019 6:45 pm

I like to drink beer in the evening. I know it leads to increased urination at night and alcohol impacts sleep. My experience is alcohol makes it easy to fall asleep but hard to stay asleep.
Going to get my first CPAP machine soon and don't plan on stopping beer... Thoughts???

CPAP will not change this equation.

Me either.

Zonker is one of the most friendly and positive posters here.

You asked for his thoughts, he gave them to you.

CPAP can be challenging, and requires lifestyles changes and compromises. You made the claim that with the amount of beer you drink you have difficulty staying asleep. That will make CPAP particularly challenging.

You also stated you are uncompromising regarding your beer. CPAP doesn't require abstinence and nobody here is suggesting that. But being as uncompromising as your post suggest may not be compatible with overcoming some of the challenges of CPAP use.

I still have a couple of drinks with friends sometimes. I limit it to that, and allow enough time before bed for it to be mostly out of my system.

Melatonin can help with sleep without any apparent impact on apnea. Sedatives of any kind make apnea worse.

Abstinence is for all those who cannot make moderation work.
Moderation is my thing--for example: one piece of chocolate

As per my knowledge drinking alcohol and smoking is not good for sleep apnea patients. I always avoid drinking alcohol, bear also.
