Does anyone else have a BAD gag reflex

Post by Jarboejoe » Tue Aug 30, 2016 8:58 am

Since the onset of what i believe was my sleep apnea, I have always had a horrible gag reflex in the morning. It was so bad sometimes I would gag and cough and almost throw up for not reason. Brushing my teeth was difficult, I nearly threw up everyday?

Since treatment its gotten a lot better, still have it some days though. Just have never read about it being a symptom.

You probably had GERD - acid relux which created slime in you throat. Your body produces mucus to protect itself from the acid.

Mine stopped dead the first night. No more early morning coughing until you puke.

Interesting, other than that gagging in the morning I have no other symptoms. I suppose its happening at night and I don't know about it?

This was another symptom I discovered today whilst undergoing dental treatment. I have always had a bad gag reflex when undergoing treatment - fillings have been a real problem and I must drive my dentist insane. I only got diagnosed with apnoea about a month ago but did a google search. It looks like there is recognised link between a hypersensitive gag reflex and sleep apnoea. Some people have said it improved after starting CPAP. I get my CPAP next week so we shall see.

I have always had a really bad gag reflex. I haven't really noticed it one way or another since I started treating my OSA. I'll have to take note and see if it's better tomorrow morning when I brush my teeth.

Mine's alway been good, great actually! Able to regularly identify by little more than a quick sniff/whif of made-from-scratch pork green chili verde that's been in the fridge a day or two too long, bad organic yogurt by nothing more than it's 3-week old expiration date and a quick accompanying snort and refrigerated canned tomato soup made stove-top from evaporated milk just 10 days ago, Oh, and most recently, small stupid-spendy chunks of Whole Foods Parmigiano Reggiano from "just" pre-Thanksgiving 2018. It's a blessing and thank God for it!!!

Pre-shredded parmesan is as nifty a growing medium as lukewarm agar.
I am switching to wedges, which I can butcher myself at the last minute.

I have a bad gag reflex. I have always struggled to take pills. If it hits the wrong spot on the way down, I will lose my lunch. Xrays at the dentist are a struggle.

In terms of sleep apnea, I haven't had an issues since using cpap. But before that, I would wake up choking and gasping, and I would often continue choking until I threw up. I used to believe it was just gerd, but I think the closing airway creates suction. I was bringing up the stomach acid and then choking on it. This has never happened when using cpap.

Who would have thought it would be this challenging to sleep and breathe at the same time?

If it’s Gerd, your esophagus could be chronically inflamed from acid build up. Medication can be used to relieve that and allow your throat to heal from the reflux, if that’s what it is. You should ask you doctor. He would have to scope your throat by going through the mouth or up through you nose. Not pleasant through the nose. Took about 4 months to get mine under control and heal up.

I've held off posting this for days, but this is my bad gag reflex.

This eggman crap is just a red herring! He often tries distract us from his menacing ways by claiming to be an eggman. Wait, now I am confused? Is he a eggman, walrus, or a herring???
Are there songs about herring?
If so, Simply Red should have sung it.
B-dum, tish!

It is weird, but some time ago, while I was cleaning my ears,
I found a trigger point in my ear canal that makes me nauseous.
Try not to do that.

Yes I have a bad gag reflex and I have found it's correlated with my fatigue levels. If I have awesome sleep for a while it pretty much goes away. If I've been burning the candle at both ends I can barely brush my teeth. It's good to hear someone else is the same as me.
