What kind of tape?

Post by peggyb » Thu Dec 14, 2006 5:59 pm

Hey -

I posted last week and got lots of great responses! This forum is making it so much easier to get through this first month. Tips on how to travel with the CPAP, etc has been SO helpful! Thank you.

One suggestion was to put tape over my mouth at night to prevent mouth breathing. What kind of tape? I'm allergic to adhesives, so I bought some hypoalergetic paper tape and it won't stick. it gets damp and falls off. Any suggestions?

I use Nexcare 2" paper tape. It seems to work very well. It is available online. The only pharmacy I can find the 2 inch tape is in Walgreen's.

Wash your face to remove any oils and the tape will stick better. It takes some will power not to keep running your tongue over your lips since that will cause them to become wet and the tape to loosen.

Good luck...

I use micropore tape. You have to be sure to remove it slowly. It really sticks well!

The tapes that Brenda and beneyw suggested work well for a lot of people.

Here are some more topics to check out, peggyb. If you don't find a tape that works for you, you might be able to try something other than tape to control the mouth leaks:

Funny you should ask...

I spent a good deal of time yesterday searching the forum for advice on this very topic. I'm six days into using CPAP and have begun to realize that waking up with a very dry mouth was not a good thing.

After a trip to the store, I came home with a roll of CVS-brand 1-inch non-allergenic paper tape. I used it last night and it seemed to work fine. It held well and was firmly in place when I got up. No dry mouth. Problem seems solved for me. Of course, your mileage may vary.

I used Johnson & Johnson Hypoallergenic 1" wide paper tape, it stuck pretty good and came off without tearing your lips off, don't use cloth tape.

I cut a piece about 1.75" long, folded back about 1/4" to make a quick removal flap so it is easy and quick to grab ahold of if needed. Goes across lips horizontally, doesn't need to completely seal the lips, try and keep your tongue planted in the hard palate.

I use Coach brand Sports Tape. I tried Ace Sports tape and it wouldn't hold but the Coach Brand holds very well, is comfortable, cheap, and easy to find and doesn't leave a lot of sticky stuff on your face the next morning.

I use the 2" Nexcare Gentle Paper Tape. I make sure I cut a nice long piece of about seven inches, and fold over a half inch on each end.
That way it stays nice and secure because the outer edges always stay pretty dry.

However.... The past several nights I haven't taped because I've been trying the Tiara Ruby chinstrap. I was VERY skeptical of this at first, and I swore I would NEVER try a chinstrap again if this didn't work. But SURPRISE!---It's been working pretty good.
They come in several sizes, but I bought the small because I didn't want to risk it being too loose. Luckily it was not too tight, and so far it looks like my taping days just "may" be over . We shall see....
