AHI = 34, but I had a very restful sleep. Am I the only one?

Post by Bamford » Tue Aug 20, 2019 10:00 am

Hi,

I am new here, and reading cpaptalk has been very useful. Oscar has been a great help.

I was diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea last month (AHI =34; OA=7.8; H=26.2) and with about 30 days of CPAP (min 6 cmH2O – max 8 cmH2O) my AHI is averaging around 1 (between 0.4 and 1.5, and basically OA’s).

What makes my case different is that I felt my sleep very restful prior to CPAP, and didn’t notice any difference in the quality of my sleep with it.

I was directed to have a Sleep Lab Test by my cardiologist, after having some episodes of very high blood pressure (200/140) that didn’t have any other explanation.

After the CPAP my BP is absolutely stable (120/80).

My question is: Are there other cases of OSA that the patient feels he is sleeping well, wakes up rested in the morning and has spiked in his BP?

For me yes I saw a reduction in BP when I was fully treated on my cpap also I no longer got up at night to use the bathroom. Overtime I felt more rested and I now wake earlier, but I never felt really tired

Sometimes we think we were asleep when we were only unconscious.
It is not exactly the same thing.

Forget about your sleep for a moment. Were you full of energy all day?

That is a good point. But I believe I had a normal level of energy for my age, and I don’t see any change yet... Maybe with more therapy time I can feel more energetic...

It is not physically possible to have "very restful sleep" when your sleep is being interrupted every couple of minutes.

You may have been able to adequately cope, but that's not good restful sleep, and your BP reflected that.

it can, indeed, take more therapy time to feel more energetic.

in the meantime, congratulations on taking to your therapy so readily! it's rare to see that happen.
people say i'm self absorbed.
but that's enough about them.

I agree that it sound unusual. But the stable BP is justification enough for me to go ahead with the CPAP therapy.

I was diagnosed with an ahi of 79, though it is probably higher. I did not reach deep sleep or REM during the diagnosis phase.

I asked for a sleep study because I learned that my high blood pressure (despite being on 3 medications) was most likely caused by sleep apnea. Until that point, I was aware that I had sleep apnea, but didn't think it bothered me much. I understood it to be waking up a lot. I got up 2-3 times a night to use the bathroom, but felt like I slept fine.

I really had no idea how crappy my sleep was until I got a taste of how good it could be. Once home from the sleep study, I went back to crappy sleep while waiting for the machine. And then it took awhile to master the mask. Some things improved quickly (fewer bathroom trips, no more nightmares or choking fits). Some things took longer (feeling more energetic, better attitude).

I really like my sleep was okay before the sleep study. A bit short, but restful.
