Cpap and musky smelling sneeze

Post by Swapwap » Thu Aug 18, 2016 4:54 pm

Curious if anyone else has experienced a musky smelling sneeze since using a Cpap. I have been on a Cpap for over five years now and noticed it a few years ago. Yes I suspect I have postnasal drip but my sinuses have been much better since in a Cpap for obvious reasons and my Cpap does have a humidifier as well. Anyway I just recently fought of the subject again and was curious if anyone else has the same issue or is anyone knows of a way to prevent or address the sneeze smell.

Thanks

Really trying not to be facetious, but are you saying you can smell your own sneeze vs how the machine smells?

Next time sneeze into a baggy then seal it and send it to the FDA.

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

Yes, I can smell them. Never had that problem before using a Cpap. My wife can smell them too. Idk, but the only thing different from the time it started was the use of a Cpap. So I was just curious....

Maybe try washing your mask in hot water and Dawn soap?? Have you changed the filter? If this doesn't work you may need to buy a new mask and hose. Hard to imagine it would be the machine itself. Are you living in a humid climate?

Have you seen a doctor?
I knew a lady who contracted a pneumonal fungal infection from the fields around her family farm.
Save any samples--tissues, etc, in a baggie for the lab.
It is less likely your cpap has contributed to this so much as perhaps protected you somewhat.
You do change your filters and water? I hope so.

Get tested for fungal infections. Living near some black mold could end up with it in your body.

I'm not sure how to interpret that part about your wife smelling it, too.
But, if you're cleaning/replacing your intake filters and using reasonably fresh distilled water in your machine, you might want to investigate other sources.
Our nasal passages can absorb odors (probably accumulating on the hair follicles) and those can be noticeable for some time. Anyone who has worked around various chemicals can verify that. You get a whiff of something and it can stay with your for quite awhile.
You might also try doing some nasal cleansing to see if that will help remove the smell.

I have had a musky smell in my equipment after a 2 week vacation in Mexico, we were living beside the ocean with a high humidity.
Air conditioner going full tilt on hot days and when you entered the room I could smell mildew sort of.
When we returned home I cleaned the equipment very well and problem disappeared because of the dry Alberta air.

The farm wife with the fungal infection was my roommate in the hospital several years ago.
She lost part of a rib and part of a lung. Do see your doctor, please.
