Re: paxil & apnea
Seems very unlikely that Paxil would cause apnea. Apnea in caused by disproportion, and consequent dysfunction, in the upper airway. What is more likely is that sleep-breathing disorders are hidden for many years before they become obvious enough to cause us to consider treatment. Many of us ignore ...

Re: Any Clues?
Here are some thing I have noticed and thought about. I have been using CPAP for five solid months. I have found that I, too, am more exhausted when I use it than when I don't. Here's the deal: I am pretty sure that CPAP is fixing my breathing issues, but causing other issues in place of those. The ...

Was Michael Jackson a victim of sleep-disordered breathing?
Michael Jackson's death was sad. I hate to speculate about someone's death, but if it was sleep-disordered breathing, perhaps his passing can contribute to greater public awareness? First, his numerous plastic surgeries had narrowed his nostrils to the point where, one guesses, they were poorly func...

Re: CPAP May Not Cure Daytime Sleepiness
THANK YOU VELBOR! I appreciate your posts - the point you make in your second post is SO relevant. Johnny's question in the first post is whether, when CPAP treatment is verifiable (i.e compliant) and effective, residual sleepiness can remain. This begs the question you so aptly pointed out, by what...

Re: What Age Should Children Have a Sleep Study Done?
Age and weight are no clue! I started having sleep breathing problems as an adolescent! (same BMI as now, 20.2) My son is 15, 6 feet tall and weighs 155 lbs (BMI, a whopping 20.7); he's always tired and has the same sleep issues I did at his age. I am pretty sure he has UARS. Birddog, and anyone els...

Re: What Age Should Children Have a Sleep Study Done?
Birddog, it is great that you are concerned and watching out for your child. The reason OSA might run in families is not that it's generally inherited, but that jaw/facial issues that affect the airway contribute to OSA, and these (the jaw/facial issues) ARE inherited. Some of the things they mentio...

Re: Best Doctor to Manage Sleep Apnea?
Would it be too hard to go to the appointment with the PA or nurse practitioner, and then see the doctor later if things don't seem right? First of all, if the doctor were to adjust your CPAP pressure based on your new sleep study results, he or she would want you to try it out before deciding anyth...

Re: Not breathing with CPAP on!
dseturam, the stopped breathing may be an adjustment thing. I noticed that happened to me frequently at first. It was one of the things that changed pretty quickly with regular CPAP use. What kind of mask are you using? For example, if it's a nasal only interface, you may be waking because the air i...

Re: Nose pillows wont stay in
Maybe, it's a question of mask design, goofyfever. I noticed the same thing with my Mirage Liberty. It was like the pillows were trying to pry themselves up and out of my nostrils. What I realized is that the angle of the mouth part of the mask was affected by my retrognathic lower jaw. (My lower ja...

Overthinking, Rooster? Who, me? ........nah..... (BTW, I have never said I disagree with you about FFM being simpler. You know I have two FFMs of my very own, and I should probably tell you how it went: Get first interface, nasal pillows. Mouth comes open, mouth leak. Decide to try full face. Have D...

Re: Teenage son has sleep apnea - have questions
Painterman, thanks for the post. My teen-age son has fatigue problems. After two years of testing for anemia, waiting for his growth to finish, etc I am considering whether to go through the sleep study. (I have UARS, BTW) Can you send me a PM (personal message) with some details about how your son ...

Re: Air leak from nose to mouth?
One thing about CPAP being continuous pressure and continuing to provide pressure as you expire ( and perhaps this is what you were getting at, Muse) is that it is working against the natural functions of your nose and throat. It feels funny in more than one way. Your velolingual seal is designed to...

Re: Allergy to CPAP machine
There is a kind of nasal issue called eosinophilic rhinitis. It's not an allergy, but it has very similar symptoms. There is also something called vasomotor rhinitis. I am sorry I don't have any sites to recommend. I would definitely look into these. One medication that works well with both allergic...

Re: Question for the sleep experts (or anyone else)
WOW! You can see who's still sleep deprived "Your sleep cycles vary in length and competition." - correction: COMPOSITION! I think the idea is that you feel better when you wake naturally. But I don't think it actually harms you to use an alarm or have someone wake you in mid-cycle. I would love to ...
