Re: Machine causing insomnia
Victory is mine! I managed to sleep with the MAD last night without taking any drugs! My wife said I did not snore! Woohoo!

Re: Machine causing insomnia
I did return the CPAP months ago. I just never bothered to update my profile. I kind of want to keep that up, just to remember what I had, in case I ever need that information again.

Re: Machine causing insomnia
I took Ambien on Friday and Saturday and slept through both nights with the device. I haven’t tried since then. I plan to try again on Friday and Saturday but this time I will take Benadryl or melatonin instead, to see if I can pull it off with some milder. Assuming that works the following weekend ...

Re: Machine causing insomnia
I managed to sleep through the whole night with my MAD! I took Ambien to fall asleep, but I stayed asleep and woke up feeling okay! Woohoo! I will attempt a drug free attempt after a few more successful drug induced nights. My wife said I still snored, but it was definitely quieter.

Re: Does Anyone Hate their CPAP?
I’ve always found it weird that dentists are considered to be a totally different profession than medical doctors, as opposed to considering them as medical doctors who specialize in the mouth. In the USA insurance always seems to require CPAP first. I don’t know if I could have gotten it to (partia...

Re: Does Anyone Hate their CPAP?
I would gladly get rid of mine if it would let me sleep without snoring.

Re: Does Anyone Hate their CPAP?
Interestingly in the USA when dentists do MADs, they bill health insurance policies, NOT dental insurance. The guy who fitted me for a MAD is both a Dentist AND a medical doctor! When I had my consultation he was able to see if taking my tonsils out would be a viable solution, but unfortunately they...

Re: Does Anyone Hate their CPAP?
Insurance may cover part of the MAD. Mine paid for half of it. I can pay for the other half with Pretax money in Flexible Savings Account, so that helps as well. Hopefully I will be able to use it.

Re: Pod153’s Big Mild OSA/UARS Adventure - ready to give up
I struggled with difficulty falling asleep for most of my life. I successfully used some sleep hygiene techniques to largely tame (but not eliminate) the insomnia monster. To tame the beast I needed a certain amount of rigidity in my night time schedule. Things like no caffeine after 2:00pm, so offi...

Re: Machine causing insomnia
I returned the CPAP machine months ago. I just paid $400 towards my cost of the oral appliance. I do wonder if it would have been smarter to just pay the $2,000 for eXcite OSA. I guess I will find out soon enough.

Re: Machine causing insomnia
I got fitted for the oral device last weekend, but it probably won’t be available until January, so we will see if I and wasting over $800 or not on it (insurance paid for half).

Re: Pod153’s Big Mild OSA/UARS Adventure - ready to give up
I tried CPAP for 3 months. I managed to fall asleep a total of 4 times during this period, and I was drugged for each of those. The last time I tried to use the CPAP I took Ambien and still couldn’t fall asleep so I returned it. Like you my AHI is fairly low so the health risk of doing nothing for m...

Re: Does Anyone Hate their CPAP?
Thanks for the advice. Since there is no insurance monitoring requirement I plan to gradually ease my way into it by wearing it awake. I won’t attempt to sleep with it until I get to the point where having it in my mouth doesn’t totally bother me. Then I will wait till the weekend, since I tend to h...

Re: Does Anyone Hate their CPAP?
Yes. CPAP is awful, most patients quit within the first year, yet for some bizarre reason people call it “The Gold Standard.” I am surprised that anyone can actually fall sleep using one. I tried CPAP for 3 months. The sensation of something touching my face prevents me from physically being able to...

Re: Machine causing insomnia
I knew CPAP would not work for me many, many years ago. Like most people with sleep apnea I found the treatment (CPAP) to be worse than the disease. I DID learn a lot from this website, so thanks to many of you. Can I use an oral appliance? I doubt it, but I don’t actually know. If the insurance won...
