The Sullivan chinstrap is easy to use and more comfortable (overall) than the Premium. Its one piece construction allows for easy fit and adequate control of chin restraint angle. But the one piece construction is also its undoing. Literally.
I tried it on top and under a nasal pillow mask and a traditonal nasal mask. All configuratons were do-able. Falling asleep with it on is no problem; but waking up with it in place just was not happening. Not sure at what point it slips off. I will assume that it loosens when I change from sleeping on one side to the other. Its thin design did make it a more comforatble fit than the somewhat bulky Premium. I can say that whatever amount of time it did stay on was worth the effort of sliding it back on when needed. Bottom line - I give it a 4 on controlling PM drool and a 1 (Poor)on controlling AM cotton mouth.

Wow. What a hunk of machinery this is. I was initlly impressed with the engineering demonstrated in the consruction and design of this chinstrap. Robust and sturdy; you could probably carry a bowling ball with it. Seriously. The Sullinvan chinstrap has only one point of connection. The premium has at least four. All of which are idependently controlled. Which leads to one of the drawbacks. I had to pause each night to figure out which end to put my head in and how to fit my nasal pillow or nasal mask over or under it. The bulk provides awesome support for your chin but sometimes feels like you are wearing a ski mask. It can get quite warm under the straps. There were a few night that the strap stayed in place throughout the night. Unlike the Sullivan - if this one slipped off - it required me to get out of bed - go to the bathroom and turn on a light so I could shimmy it back in place. Drool control = 5 (excellent)AM cotton mouth control factor = 3 (so-so).

The Sullivan chinstrap is smaller and made of better quality materials than the Premium chinstrap. The thinness of the strap made it a little difficult to close it on top of my head, as it wasn't always easy to line up the velcro. It also tended to slip on me when putting on my nasal mask, however, which made it practically unusable.

   By Challenge participant

The Premium chinstrap has a wider band over the head, which makes it easy to hook, and also has an extra strap for putting it around the back of the head. Once on, I never had an issue with it slipping or not staying on my head.

  By Challenge participant

The Sullivan chinstrap moved much less on my head than the Premium. It also did not get caught in the velcro straps on my headgear as easily when I had to make adjustments in the middle of the night. Also, it was much more comfortable, will less straps to worry about. The only thing that could be better is the strap can rub a bit against the top sides of the ears which can be a bit irritating. I was very pleased with the Sullivan Chip Strap.

   By Challenge participant

The Premium strap is nice, but it can be a bit hot. It does a decent job holding my mouth closed, but even with the back strap, it seemed to move on my head a lot more than the Sullivan. The strap looks very nice and feels nice, but as I stated it can get hot as so much of your face seems to be covered by it and the mask head gear. The strap also seems to stretch a bit too easily, making the strap that goes around the back of the head a bit loose after extended use.
Finally, the fabric gets caught in the velcro on my head gear way too easy. It can be irritating dealing with that when making adjustments in the middle of the night.

  By Challenge participant

I like the fact that it's less material than the Premium chinstrap. It's smaller. But unfortunately, I think that makes it easier to slide off my head during the night. It's very comfortable and in most ways above average. I liked it. I do have to re-adjust it when I wake up during the night. Truthfully, I might purchase either one at this point. I have two very good choices here.

   By Challenge participant

This is the strap I've been using for years now and it's very reliable. It has more material and it has a cross strap to help it stay on my head a little better. Depending on the shape of your head this could be the better option because it stays on my head a little better than the Sullivan. However, both fall off my head during the night. I just have to re-adjust during the night.

  By Challenge participant

I really wanted to like this chinstrap.

COMFORT:
The material feels comfortable and cool against my skin, and seems to not stretch nearly so much as the Respironics Premium strap which means it ought to last far longer. I like that it has a more ″formed″ cup for my chin to rest in too.

EASY ON AND OFF:
It is easy to put on... though near impossible to keep in place... which of course means taking it off is TOO easy.

CLOSES MOUTH:
During the brief periods of time it stayed in place it did a very good job of keeping my mouth closed but I lost count of the number of times the headstrap slipped back on my head thus rendering the chinstrap useless.

MATERIAL QUALITY:
The strap is well stitched and the material is very comfy. The chincup is deeply formed and has a soft slightly fuzzy feel to it that is very nice.

APPEARANCE:
There is no chinstrap in the known universe that could EVER be considered a fashion statement. That said... the Sullivan Chinstrap is no uglier than any of it's competitors and better looking than some.

STAYS IN PLACE:
The great and insurmountable failing of the Sullivan Chinstrap is that it simply does not stay in place. I tried every conceivable method of weaving the strap through various parts of my headgear but only succeeded in making it nigh on impossible to get it properly placed. Even adding another strap (similar to the extra strap on the premium headstrap) didn't help much. I think the narrowness of the Sullivan strap is the main cause of this problem. It makes it cooler to wear... but virtually eliminates its usefulness. I found myself wishing they had created some sort of formed cup (or cap)for the top of my head (akin to the wonderful chin cup but obviously larger) or else some sort of double strap closer to the setup on Tiara's Ruby chinstrap.

BOTTOM LINE: I gave the Resmed Sullivan Chinstrap an overall rating of 3 because I really do like the material and the deeply formed chin cup. Without these two redeeming features I would have felt compelled ot give it only a rating of 1. If you DO choose this chinstrap, be prepared to make modifications in order to get it to stay in place.

   By Challenge participant

I have used the Premium Chinstrap off and on for about 2 years. It is NOT perfect... but it's by far the best I have used yet.

COMFORT:
Though it covers more of your face and is therefore a bit warmer to wear (though not much) it is still exceptionally comfortable.

EASY ON AND OFF:
It is slightly more difficult to get on in the beginning... but a little practice quickly solves this issue.

CLOSES MOUTH:
It does an excellent job of keeping my mouth closed though I still think there is room for improvement. The material is just a bit TOO stretchy and I have to tighten it slightly more than I would really like in order to counteract the stretchiness. The stretchiness is the source of one other problem for me. I apparently have a smaller than average head, at least CPAP supply manufacturers seem to think so :-) and I found that I have WAY too much overlap in the ends of the main strap. In fact I darn near ran out of room to secure the velcro in place. This is easily fixable with a pair of scissors and some new velcro stitched in place, but I hate having to modify things the instant I buy them. The stretchy material simply amplified the size problem. I wish they would offer these things in two or three different sizes to fit a broader range of head sizes without modification. It should be noted, however, that after a couple of weeks of wear the material seemed to reach it's ″maximum stretchiness″ and from then on had just enough ″give″ to the material to keep it comfortable as I moved without actually allowing my mouth to open. Perhaps I should have thrown the thing in super hot wash water to see if it would shrink some but not knowing the potential outcome I have been reluctant to try it.

MATERIAL QUALITY:
The material is soft and comfortable and has held up for 2 years so far... so I'd have to say it is well made overall.

APPEARANCE:
There is no chinstrap in the known universe that could EVER be considered a fashion statement. That said... the Premium Chinstrap is only slightly uglier than its competitors and only because it covers more of you face leaving you looking like one of those old time pictures of some with the mumps.

STAYS: IN PLACE:
The greatest benefit of the Premium Chinstrap is that it is hands down the most stable and secure chinstrap I have yet to use. Once you get it properly adjusted and figure out how to get it on and off without undoing the straps... it RARELY if EVER slips out of place. I do tend to put the chinstrap on first and then put my mask headgear on top... but this has more to do with the fact that I use the blue mesh cap style of headgear which is slightly slippery than with any failing of the chinstrap.

BOTTOM LINE: The only thing that prevents me from rating the Respironics Premium Chinstrap a 5 is my issues with the sizing and the stretchiness of the fabric. Otherwise it is the best I've found. If you have to wear a chinstrap... this is the one to own!!!

  By Challenge participant

A clean, elegant allearance. Obviously designed for one function. I was dubious of it, however. The only thing I could think of when trying to fit it was that I was trying to tie a string around the long axis of an egg. It never stayed in place. I always woke with a dry mouth. My leaks were insane.

   By Challenge participant

This thing takes getting used to. The way I wear it is not the way it's shown in the pictures. I don't think I need a ″chin strap″ as much as I need something to keep my lips closed. (I can't tape - looking into PolyGrip strips.). This thing is unstructured enough that a ″think outside the box″ solution worked for me with it. What I don't like about it is that it is SO wide that it's really hot to sleep in.

  By Challenge participant

This strap is light and does keep my mouth closed most of the time.
But the material making up the chin cup is not very soft, is uncomfortable, and leaves a very visible mark under my chin which then lasts most of the day. I had to adjust the strap tightly upon my head so that my mouth would not open up during the night.

   By Challenge participant

The two strap design with this chinstrap helps keep it in place much better than the single strap Sullivan, it has wide straps, soft chin cup material, does not leave a rash mark after being used all night and does keep my mouth closed while I sleep.
The problem is that the elasticity in the straps start to break down and have to be adjusted often. The chin cup strap slot for the support strap starts to spread and tear after a few uses. The Velcro also starts to break down after a few uses.

  By Challenge participant

Being less bulky was nice. It fit much better with my comfort lite II. Being less bulky allowed me to wear it under my mask, putting less pressure on my mask and reducing marks on my forehead Chin cup was more comfortable. All in all the unit fit and was more comfortable for me. hope this helps others in choosing a chin strap.

Thanks
Wayne

   By Challenge participant

I don't like the rear support, it pulls the strap back into my ears. Does not fit as well due to bulky material. Will be switching to the sullivan.

  By Challenge participant

I liked the easy on and easy off on the SUllivan Strap. I do not like that I have to have it so tight (to stay in place) that I had marks on my chin in the morning thatdidn't go away for a while. If I wear my haor up in a pony tail, there isn't as much slippage.

   By Challenge participant

The retaining strap made slippage much less a possibility. It took some more time to get on and situated, and it was definitely more bulkier. I felt it cupped the chin better under the lower lip, and therefore, helped to close the mouth better. For the most part, no marks on my face in the morning.

  By Challenge participant

This is like choosing a recipient for an ″Accountant Of The Year″ award! Chinstraps are alas, tearfully boring. The history of chinstrapping clearly comes straight from someone named Igor in the basement of the Tower Of London. The only thing that's changed is the substitution of velcro for the big rusty steel buckles and creaky wooden cranks of yore. But I digress. Coming out of the package, this strap looks like nice construction and the chin cup looks comfy enough. There's even a little arrow to point you to the front? The strap looks painfully narrow but in the end, is not uncomfortable. But old tyme chinstrap users will be shaking the package looking for the rest of the harness. No stabilizing strap around the back of the head? This strap brings to me the image of a skinny rubber band around my head with false hopes of it staying in place. Don't dare to move! Even laying perfectly still it will surely attempt to slip off. And sure enough it does just that. Maybe the same guys that thought up that impossible to get in to clamshell product packaging could dream up a functional chinstrap that stays put?

   By Challenge participant

This is a slam dunk for this strap. But really only because the competitions bus breaks down before the game. It's winning strategy? Sorry, top secret. Okay, you've broken me. It's a velcro stabilizing strap and guess what? It goes around the back of the head to keep the strap from popping off while you lay innocently sleeping. Sure, the main strap is wider and the material is real stretchy. The adjusting velcro patch at the top is large. The chin cup is made from that same material as Laura Petries' stretch pants (maybe the stirrup is what gave them the idea for the back strap?). No little arrow to tell you which way is front, but the strap across your forehead should signal a fail! All in all, the best chinstrap I've been honored to get my head caught in, but that's still a little like saying Strep throat is better than the Measles. If you need to use a chinstrap (and you know you do) this is the high tech answer to your prayer. Yawn.

I could not get this product to work for me. I would get it nice and Tight and I would wake up and it would be loose and falling off. It was more comfortable with my Mirage swift LT mask then the Premium chin strap but it didnt keep my mouth closed. With out the strap around the back of my head to hold it in place the top would slide forward on my head causing it to get loose. Its well made and very comfortable.

   By Challenge participant

This is a great product. It stays in place and hold my mouth closed all night long. It was more comfortable with my Ultra mirage II nasal mask then my Mirage swift LT but it did the job very well with both. The straps are a little wider then with the Sullivan chin strap making it more noticeable but the strap that wrapped around the back of my head held everything in place all night long no matter how much I tossed and turned. I would highly recommend this chin strap. This product is well made.

  By Challenge participant

BETTER: Not better. Was disappointed.

DID NOT LIKE: Most of all I did not like that it did not stay in place. I wear the strap under the CPAP straps and still it slipped forward at the top of my head so it did not keep my mouth shut. It also left ridges on my face where the material hems are.

LIKED: The material is very soft so I hoped it would not leave marks. The white stitching marking one edge is a very nice idea and is helpful in figuring out which edge goes to the front.

I will not use the Sullivan.

   By Challenge participant

BETTER: The best features are the wide band across the top, which adds stability and is adjustable, the back strap which is the key feature that keeps it all in place, and the material is soft. It really does work. The back strap that attaches at both sides is completely adjustable as well, so you can avoid hitting at the ears.

DID NOT LIKE: It also leaves slight marks on my face, but not as much as the Sullivan, and they go away quickly.

I will use the Premium Chinstrap.

  By Challenge participant

The material is light and seems durable. The Premium chinstrap has the edge in staying in place as it has a strap going around the back, so the Sullivan did slide off the top of the head sometimes. But the lightness of the design combined with strength gives it better performance.

   By Challenge participant

The design is better for this unit, but it is large, therefore heavy and sweaty, and the material started to fall apart very quickly, just on face whiskers and the occasional wash.

  By Challenge participant

The overall quality of construction is superior to any other chinstrap I have used. It stayed in place and did not move or slip which is important to me because I tend to re-position frequently at night.

   By Challenge participant

I do like the additional strap for the back of the head to prevent the chinstrap from slipping out of place. The material is extremely comfortable and the strap does a good job overall. I was disappointed, however, in the overall construction as after only 2 weeks the foam padding is separating from the lining. This is pretty shoddy construction for something that is promoted as ″premium″.

  By Challenge participant

I haven't used this as long, but I feel this does a better overall job.

The chin strap pocket fits the chin better and doesn't leave marks on face. The single straps makes it a little harder to stay on people that have a egg shaped head.

   By Challenge participant

Chin strap leaves endentions in
side of face that don't go away for hours, if I loosen it, then the mouth
won't stay closed. The felcro dosen't
extend far enough for people with a smaller head. But the 2nd strap does make it stay in place better.

  By Challenge participant

The extra deep chin strap keeps the strap from slipping off the chin. However, the single strap connection overhead can slip forward or back off the ″sweet spot″ whhere I can get it to keep in position all night.

   By Challenge participant

The 3 point strap system keeps the chin strap in position to best keep my mouth closed overnight. It doesnt slip because the direction of hold is virticle to keeping my mouth closed. The downside of this strap is the bulk.

  By Challenge participant

At first glance I thought, ″This thing will never work - it's too flimsy.″ When I put it on I was pleasantly surprised at how cool, lightweight, and comfortable it was! It worked better with my nasal pillows than the Premium Chinstrap. I must have an oddly-shaped head, however, because neither chinstrap stayed completely immovable - seems to slide on my head. The chin cup was surprisingly comfortable and the strap itself remained lightweight, and cool (even during a recent 105 degree heat wave). This by itself was the single most important feature for me. I liked the ″v″ that reminded me where the position it. I would like it even more if they could figure out how to conquer the ″head-sliding″ issue. I wake up every night (with both chinstraps) trying to reposition it so my nasal pillows don't get pushed off. The elastic and velcro did not lose shape, and it was very easy to get on and off. You can't beat the price, as well - a big plus in these trying economic times. I will definitely continue to use this strap. I may have to add a back strap of velcro to help keep it from sliding, but overall I am very happy.

   By Challenge participant

Every night I battle with this chinstrap. No matter what I do it slides a LOT on my head. The width of the strap, and back velcro piece, seems at first glance to be an attempt to solve the problem, but it continues to move when used with my nasal pillows. If I tighten the velcro it gives me a headache and marks on my face because due to the sturdy construction. When the weather is hot it makes my face even hotter because it covers so much of it and is not made of breathable material. Although it seems to be sturdier than the Sullivan chinstrap, and likely will last longer, it is a lot more costly and less comfortable.

  By Challenge participant

I liked that it was comfortable, the materials wash easily, and it isn't bulky.

Does not stay in place as well as the Premium chinstrab

   By Challenge participant

Stays in place better

Too bulky and materials are harder to wash

  By Challenge participant

The Sullivan chin strap is easy to put on, and comfy to wear but it just doesn't stay in place as well as the premium. Also it was hard for me to get enough tension on it to really keep my mouth closed. As a first chinstrap it does look less intimidating than the premium, if that matters to you.

   By Challenge participant

Although more complex and heavier than the Sullivan, it is also more effective. The wider straps really allow you to get a good deal of tension to keep your mouth shut. Also the back strap does help keep it in place during the night, especially if you move around. Since there is more material and it is thicker, it can get a little warm.

  By Challenge participant

There is a little stitched ″v″ by which one can find the front. This is a nice feature but hard to locate in the dark.

It stays on surprisingly well, but still not as well as the premium chinstrap.

It fits my big head well. (The deluxe chinstrap was too short.)

   By Challenge participant

Thicker and more numerous straps interfere more with the facemask straps.

After only 3 months of use there is significant separation of the material layers where the velcro of the second strap attaches. I can probably move the attachment point and use it for 3 or more additional months.

It fits my big head well. (The deluxe chinstrap was too short.)

  By Challenge participant

It does not stay in place and in my opinion is of lesser quality and seems to be very flimsy.

   By Challenge participant

It stays in place with the stability of the strap going around the back of the head. It sems to be of much better quality.

  By Challenge participant

The Sullivan chinstrap is a good idea but is poorly executed. I was anxious to try a smaller chinstrap but after the first night or two, I realized that my Premium chinstrap was better. Although the Sullivan chinstrap is smaller than the Premium chinstrap, it had a hard time staying in place on my head. I would wake up in the middle of the night with the top of the strap in front of where it was supposed to be and near the front of my head. Although I did not breathe through my mouth since I am used to it now, this is unacceptable for a chinstrap. The comfort was great, it was lightweight and minimalistic in design so it looked less obtrusive. If there was some sort of back-of-head support (maybe a larger top end to cup the top/back of your head?) to compliment the design, it would have gotten a better mark in my book.

   By Challenge participant

I have been using my Premium chinstrap for a few months now and although the material is starting to fray slightly, I feel that it is the better chinstrap overall. I have had less problems with it staying in place like I did with the Sullivan chinstrap. Initially, I had a problem getting the chinstrap fitted to my head. It seemed like the back loop piece did not want to sit properly on the included Velcro straps. After tinkering with it for a few months, it is at the perfect fit for my head. Although the Premium chinstrap looks more obstructive, it does what it has to do.. it stays in place and holds the chin up to prevent mouth breathing. This is what matters in a chinstrap so I feel the Premium chinstrap is the overall winner in this competition.

  By Challenge participant

My only issue with this chinstrap is that it is a little too easy to move at night. The material is wonderful and it is extremely comfortable.

   By Challenge participant

The Premium chinstrap is not comfortable. The strap is too thin to support the pressure of my mouth opening at night. The result is a pressure spot on the top of my head. Overall, I am not satisfied with this chinstrap.

  By Challenge participant

Holds my mouth closed very well. Will slip down on my head occassionally but fare superior strap as far as comfort, material used, and simple to use. Thank you now I can hopefully buy a better strap.

   By Challenge participant

Holds my mouth closed very well but I do not like the fit and have been hoping to find a better product. The strap material is not made well and deteriorates rapidy.

  By Challenge participant

The Sullivan has several problems. Because it does not have a three point attachment, it has a tendency to slip off your head at night. I found myself waking up in the middle of the night to check to make sure it was in place. Also, my sleep Dr. reccommends not using this type of chip strap bcause it has a tendency to pull your lower jaw backwards and possibly causing more obstruction. The Sullivan seemed to be made out of nice soft material and it did fit my chin well.

   By Challenge participant

I have used the Premium for several years. It does have its drawbacks, but seems to perform better than any other chinstrap I have used. One of the drawbacks is that it is made for somebody with a very large head. I have to extremely overlap some of the straps to make sure that it fits. The material is not quite as comfortable as the Sullivan, but it functions better. That is the bottom line.

  By Challenge participant

This strap held up much stronger than the premium strap. It had a snug fit with little play in the tightness.

   By Challenge participant

After a short period of time I noticed this strap stretched out requiring my to tighten it further and further each use. Not worth the money I paid in my opinion.

  By Challenge participant

The Sullivan kind of pulls the jaw toward the back of you head due to the angle the strap sits on your head. Once you get used to that, it has been a great strap for the two weeks I have used it. I didn't think this little thing was going to get the job done, but it does!

   By Challenge participant

This was a good product until it continued to stretch out past the point that I could adjust it. I have a small head and the adjustment capabilities doesn't compensate for the stretching.

This strap pulls the jaw straight up instead of toward the back of your head.

  By Challenge participant

couln not keep strap in place. only used 2 nights. it just did not work. tryed to interlace with mask head gear. not easy. needs other strap to hold strap in place. like premium

   By Challenge participant

stays in place easy to fit. easy to wash. wish the elastic would last longer. the split where the back straps hooks causes wide gap, so only part of velcro only hooks on 1 side .
but other then that works much better for me.

  By Challenge participant

Just a normal chain strap nothing special. I'd say run of the mill

   By Challenge participant

I've been using a C-Pap for over 10 years now and this has been the best chain strap I've found so far. It Stays in place and keeps my mouth shut!! It's worth the money

  By Challenge participant

I will not use this in the future. I like the fact that it is not as bulky as the premium chinstrap, but I could not keep it on my head. I tried several times throughout the trial to sleep with it, but reverted back to my premium chinstrap every time because it stays in place. Also, the stiching on the chin material was very scratchy against my skin.

   By Challenge participant

I will continue to use the premium chinstrap. I have tried a few other brands, but this is the only one that I have been able to successfully keep on my head without sliding off. It is unfortunate that it is bulky, however, it does the job! I would like to see a smaller chin pocket. It goes all the way to my lip.

  By Challenge participant

Hard to keep the strap on overnight.

   By Challenge participant

I have a hard time using most chinstraps, but this works better for me than others I've tried.

  By Challenge participant

The strap never stayed in place. Looks good but did not perform it's function.

It also obstructs the full face mask.

   By Challenge participant

The strap is bulkier than the Sullivan, but with the back strap stays in place for much longer.

It is easy to take off, but takes a little longer to put on. It has to be slightly out of position with a full face mask, but is still effective for the noght.

  By Challenge participant

I liked the fact it didn't have the strap that goes behind your head. This would be a better strap if the strap was wider in the area that's on top of your head. I think it'd stay in place better.Keep the strap narrow where it goes by your ears.

   By Challenge participant

I like the wider width of the strap better than I did the Sullivan. I hate the strap that goes behind your head.

  By Challenge participant

I like the ease of use. Simple but very effective and simple.
The only problem, for me, is that the chinstrap attaches backward to other chinstraps that I have used.

   By Challenge participant

The Premium Chinstrap works well, but the bulkness of the chinstrap and the double attachments are a down fall and not that easy to use. I also dose not last that long.

  By Challenge participant

I really liked the chin piece but it did little to hold the strap on (I have a very full head of hair and it's hard to keep a strap on).

   By Challenge participant

The strap around the back though another strap to attach helps keep the chin strap in place.

  By Challenge participant

The Sullivan did a good job, but it put too much pressure on the fleshy part, just underneath and behind the chin. I would wake up at night, because the pressure in that point would cause minor pain in that area. If the chin piece were redesigned to put more pressure on the chin itself, it could be a winner. Most of the time it would stay on my head properly, but it did move forward once or twice. I cannot continue to use it, because of the waking up at night.

   By Challenge participant

The Premium Chinstrap did a great job. I am not sure the foam type area at the top of the strap, will be durable enough to hold up, but only time will tell. The strap is comfortable and goes on easily, although the short strap that goes around the back of the head; the velcro does not seem to hold as firm to the main portion as it did when I first used it. Hopefully it doesn't get any worse where it fails to hold. If it proves to be durable and holds up to repeated use night after night, it is a winner, as it is very comfortable and keeps the mouth closed, as it should.

  By Challenge participant

The sullivan did not stay tight and it would not stay in place at all. It did not do the same job that the premium strap does.

   By Challenge participant

We have had 4 and been pleased with each one. The only trouble is we wish they would last longer than 6 months.

  By Challenge participant

The sullivan slips off of my head a lot. I wake up in the middle of the night with my mouth open, and have to readjust the strap. In its defense it is easy to slip on, and less bulky than the premium, but needs some kind of strap around the back of head.

   By Challenge participant

I have had 2 premium chinstraps, and the first one is worn, but still good enough to use. It is in my travel bag with my traveling machine. It is a little bulky but it gets the job done and never slips off.

  By Challenge participant

The quality of the materials was superior, high quality velcro, soft, well formed chin cup. The strap slips forward off back of head allowing mouth to open. Threading through headgear straps per instructions does not keep in place either. Bottom line, it did not keep my mouth closed!

   By Challenge participant

This is as effective of a chin strap as I have found. The wrap around strap keeps the main strap from slipping forward. You can tighten down the strap till it hurts, and it does not come loose. After six months, the velcro starts to pull off the strap. I wish Respironics would use the same high quality materials as Resmed.

Did not stay up on top of my head bunched up on the back of my head - uncomfortable

Likes - It is easy to put on. The chin cup doesn't irritate my chin. Easy to pack and wear on vacation.

Dislikes - the strap comes off easier at night. It took a while to find the right setting that didn't hurt my jaw, but would stay put for most of the night.

Likes - I really like the extra strap around the top of the head. It allows you to get more vertical force to close your jaw vs. pulling your jaw back.

Dislikes - Don't think I'd win any beauty contests wearing this. Of course, I'm not sure how many I'd win without it either. :)

Good quality material was soft and more narrow than Premium. Very comfortable. It's my choice!

Would probably be good for a man; but for an elderly lady, band was too wide, scratchy and way too warm.

The area of the chin was better molded to the shape of my chin.

The small cross-sectional area of the head strap caused it to slip and caused skin irritation.

The support strap that goes around the back and holds the strap in position. Also the material was better quality.

The area around the chin was to large and caused the material to roll along the front and back edges. Also it was not molded to the chin.

I liked the tightness of the fit and the chin ″pouch″. These were were definitely better than any other strap I have tried.I definitely had less mouth leaks with this product. However, I did not like it for 2 reasons. It was hard to put on and adjust the tightness. It took me several days to get the proper technique and fit. Also, it did not stay in place as easily, especially if I used two pillows to sleep with, as I usually do. Then the strap tended to slip over the top of my head and either come off entirely or loosen to the point of being less effective. If this strap had a stabilizing strap to go behind the head as does the Respironics strap then I would have been completely ″sold″ on this product and feel that I had finally found the ″magic bullet″ for my mouth breathing issues.

I liked the thicker and more cushioned head strap. I definitely liked the stabilizer strap that goes behind the head and keeps the strap from moving during the night, as I shift positions when I sleep. However, I did not like the lack of tightness of the fit itself. I guess I am a pretty strong mouth breather because it was difficult to get the strap tight enough to keep me from breathing through my mouth. It also tended to loose its stretchability over time and required me attaching the strap further and further over to achieve the same level of tightness.

The Sullivan chinstrap did not stay in place as well as the Premium chinstrap and did not keep my mouth closed as well.

   By Challenge participant

The Premium chinstrap has a better angle to keep my mouth closed and it stays in place much better.

Easy to adjust and stays in place if you overlap straps on nosepiece strap.I like the way it fits over your chin.

Chinstrap tends to slip off chin and ends up under you chin, but still does the job.

It is smaller. It was tough to tighten...seems like it was made for someone that is left handed. Didn't keep my mouth closed very well. Girlfriend was kept awake due to air blowing out my mouth. Switched in the middle of the night to the Premium strap.

Tighter fit and kept my mouth closed better. It is larger but still comfortable. It loses its strength over a short period of time so you have to buy them more often.

Sorry to be so negative but the Sullivan Chinstrap was useless. Get the Respironics Premium Chinstrap instead and you will sleep better. The Sullivan Chinstrap was a fancy rubber band which pulled my chin back and that hurt by the morning. I continued using it thinking I would get used to it. After several nights my chin didn't hurt as much but I found that it easily slipped off (maybe why it wasn't hurting anymore) and it wasn't keeping my mouth closed.

It does the job well and goes on/off easily. I wish that I got this long ago. I didn't realize that my mouth was opening at night. Headaches are gone and now I'm feeling refreshed in the morning. It is a well thought out design and I would recommend adding this to your CPAP/BiPAP standard equipment.

I really liked the chin support It supported my chin better and was more secure. I also liked the fact I didnt need a strap for the back of my head. Super easy to use once I fit it to my head I just slipped it on and off.

Compared to the Sullivan the premium chinstrap seemed bulky. I dont like the wide sides and the back strap always gets caught up in the strap of my mask.
The premium chinstrap is a bit easier to undo and adjust but overall the Sullivan is the chinstrap I would prefer.

This chin strap is irritating to the face where the two materials are stitched together. It also slips off very easily in the night. Due to the lack of a second strap for stability, it doesn't do a very good job of keeping my mouth closed.

While this chin strap is comfortable, the material used for the chin cup is so flimsy that it doesn't keep my mouth closed, at all. I did like the second strap that helps to stabilize the strap on the head and keep it in place.

CPAP Chinstraps Fail to Please Patients

Mouth leakage during CPAP use cause major clinical and compliance problems. Chinstraps, full face and oral masks are prescribed to stop mouth leakage. Product Challenge 9 reveals the best chinstrap offerings from the two industry leaders fail to keep mouths consistently closed and often cause sleep interrupting events. Product Challenge participants did a wonderful job of detailing their findings and offering actionable feedback.

Product Challenge respondents preferred the Respironics design nearly two to one but found the ResMed material more comfortable. Neither product provided adequate fit for very large or very small users. Both products need improvement. Neither can claim they are consistently effective and comfortable.
