Just bought my CPAP machine

Post by Emmy1 » Wed Mar 09, 2011 3:49 pm

I used a PR APAP machine for my at home titration study, then tried the ResMed for a week. I didn't like the ResMed because the tank kept drying out halfway through the night, and I couldn't access the sleep data as easily as I can on the PR machine. The ResMed is a bit quieter, but the newer model of the PR machine is nearly as quiet, especially when you compare the two machines side by side with the tubing attached, and wearing your mask. The difference is negligible. The ResMed water tank could not be filled to the fill line, because I'd end up with water in the tubing and in my mask. This never happens with the PF machine.

Why I decided to go with a Phillips Responeronics machine: The PR machine now has a backlit display making it a lot easier to read, my sleep info is a lot easier to access and more complete, the air output is on top with a swivel attachment tube, so its a lot easier to access and the hose reaches a bit further too. The new model is much quieter. It has "leak alert" which wakes me up when I have a bad leak, this is a great feature for me. The humidifier tank doesn't go dry, even on the highest setting and seems more effective. I have never had water blow into my mask. The "dry box" ensures that I won't get water into my machine, and ruin it. The machine seems a lot sturdier. Yes, its not quite as pretty, but overall, I'm more impressed with the Phillips machine. Overall, I think its a superior machine.

Just my 2 cents worth!

PS. I could not get the ResMed machine to display the info I wanted. It was even more limited than the PR machine, even though I went into the actual clinical setup and tried to change it. I'll get the software when I can afford it. As I have no insurance, and have just spend a substantial amount on my CPAP and mask, plus thousands on a powerchair, and still need to do major renovation to our home I can't buy it at this time. I've been wheelchair bound this past month and the renovations can't wait any longer.

I am sleeping better since switching back to the PR machine. The mask alert wakes me up when I have a large leak, with the ResMed I slept right through them and woke up with headaches.

The PR machine is a huge improvement over my old machine, and because of the C-flex+ I can tolerate it, even at more than double the old pressure setting. I'm finally able to get the therapy I need. It may not be ideal, but its better than nothing, which is where things were for nearly 15 years.

For now, I'm going to work on fine tuning the fit of my mask, its the major drawback to therapy at present. I'll probably have to device some sort of chin strap to hold it in place better, as the headgear keeps sliding up the back of my head, interfering with the fit of the mask. My readings are showing from 0 to .5 apneas at present which are the best readings I've ever had.

I don't mean to pop your bubble, and the Respironics is a perfectly good machine, but
my sleep info is a lot easier to access and more complete
, you're kidding, right?

Remember that all you can see on the screen is a 7 and 30 day average AHI and more importantly, 7 and 30 day averages for "large leaks". For leaks in particular, this is useless--you would have to have a very large leak for a very long time for ANYTHING to register on your screen. So you may be having a lot of leakage that IS affecting your therapy, and if you rely on the screen data you will never know it. You must purchase and use the software to be sure leaks are under control--a multi-step and time-consuming process.

My understanding is that the ResMeds give very detailed info on the screen--perhaps you were locked out of that feature during your testing.

I had no choice in machines, or I'd be using a ResMed. The Respironics is a good machine, but I do not find that the sleep info is easier to access and it is certainly NOT complete on the machine itself.

The PR System One is a great machine. I have its older brother the M Series APAP

The one thing that it really lacks is the actual data that you can see on the LED screen.
With the PR you only get 7 day and 30 day average AHI, no breakdown and no single night data. The leak rate is only for Large Leak percentile and it takes a HUGE leak to register as Large. So the data can be less than informative.
90 Percentile pressure use can also be misleading if the machine has gone chasing a leak and increased the pressure.

Do you plan to get the software so you can see exactly what is going on? Averages and percentiles like what is offered, really can be misleading at times.
