Daytime apnea

Post by glachen » Fri Aug 01, 2014 8:16 pm

I have been using cpap therapy for 18 months successfully every night since i started. My sleep average is 7 hours, average ahi is around 1. The therapy changed my life . Recently I have started suffering from apnea like events while sitting in a chair or laying down for even the shortest times under 5 minutes. I can sit comfortably if the chair is completly upright or I use a pillow to keep me in a 45 degree position. I discussed this with my general practitioner and sleep doctor at my last visits. I tried unsuccessfully to get them to prescribe a lift chair as this would give me the best seating position. My problem is I am a commercial driver and worry about talking to the doctor as this is getting worse and I dont want to lose my liscense. I would never drive and endanger my self , family or public, but as this seems to be getting worse I need to get to the bottom of this. The symptoms are lighteheadedness, nausea like feelings and I seem to stop breathing. Does anyone else have similar problems. I am 6 ft. and 235 lbs. and very active.

You should go to Emerg. asap... the symptoms you describe are likely cardiac in nature and you may well have even suffered a 'silent' heart attack, and the longer you go untreated, the more damage is done. I'm serious, I know what I'm talking about and it isn't apnea. Please just go and don't worry about 'bothering' anyone (think of your family if nothing else). Maybe don't drive yourself either! Being active isn't enough if you're either genetically or otherwise programmed for possible cardiac trouble.

Sounds like it's a serious problem for one that drives. First off I'd get a recosrding pulse ox, that worked while you are moving around, not a work well if you move around. The software should show o2 desats, and allow you and the doctor to figure how bad things are.

Somewhere there's a device that alarms if you lower your head while driving. Does your cpap collect full data, and do you monitor the dailies from it? Is your dr aware of the sleep date. Just some ideas on the problem, driving while having problems is serious for you and others. Jim

Follow Julies advice first, I didn't think about that. Shouldn't have waited 3 day's after mine to go to the E.R., didn't work out well. Jim

I'm not a Dr but this definitely sounds cardiac in nature. Specifically sounds like it could be CHF (congestive heart failure). Go to the ER now & get evaluated for possible heart attack(s) or other cardiac events. Have someone drive you if possible.

I know you are worried about your license & your job, but right now worry about your heart/life. The rest will sort itself out.

Post again to let us know how you are.
