Humidifier height position

Post by photonic » Thu Jul 31, 2014 12:48 pm

My new humidifier instruction manual says to be sure to position the humidifier below the height of my head so I have it on the lower shelf of my nightstand, but now there is not enough slack in the six foot heated hose to adequately use my Hozer hose hanger device (2 segments only). I would like to place my Asv machine on the top of my nightstand which is level with my head and then will have plenty of hose.

Should there be any problems with this? Not sure why the manual says it must be lower.

the idea is so that water that condenses in a non-heated hose can drain back into the humidifier for a second try at making it to your nose.

shouldn't be an issue with a heated hose, I'd think.

Lower placement helps reduce chances of rain out issues in the hose should condensation form. Used to be a lot more of a problem than it is now that we have heated hoses.

Also, we don't want the machine higher than the bed...don't want it getting pulled down onto a person's head. It would hurt.

Mine is on a table that is level with my mattress.

Sleeping in a camper on vacation, I had no choice but to put my S9 Autoset on the shelf just above pillow height.
I routed my Climateline hose up to the bottom of the top bunk, and down to my face with no problems.
The heated hose is the key.
edit: Will an ASV work with a longer hose?

I don't know about the sys1, but the resmed vpap adapt has a hose setting for 3 meter hoses (almost 10 feet). so, I'd have to say 'yes' with those

Very helpful replies! The PR unit only has a 6 foot hose that is heated. No longer heated options.

but, you can get longer unheated hoses... heated hoses aren't mandatory

I use a 10 ft hose because a 6 foot isn't long enough if I want to roll over to the other side of the king size waterbed (which is 6 feet wide, not counting the frame.)

Might have to give it a go w/o the Hozer hanger.

My DME just responded (she is VERY good) and said that the manual instructions assume a non heated hose and they have not had any problems with higher placement with a heated hose. So I should have enough slack now to use the 6 foot heated hose with the Hozer. Thanks for all the input.

FWIW, My unit while in my truck sits about a foot above the mattress in a cubby. The hose is routed up around 2', then clipped to a clip on a bungee cord that stretches over my bed, from one side to the other. This allows the clip to slide from left to right overhead, with the hose hanging slightly lower. An odd setup, I know...however, the bunk is a twin size bed, and this setup keeps excess hose off the mattress and out of my way while I sleep. Also, even with the machine above the level of the bed, the hose still runs up a couple feet, which keeps the rainout to a minimum. Did I mention I have a home made fleece hose cozy covering most of the hose? Only the shorty little slim hose to the mask isn't fully covered.

At home, I'm struggling to find a system that works. The machine is now on a small shelf next to the bed, and sits lower than the mattress top. However, I have no current permanent setup to lift the hose because "my side" of the bed is right under a window, which limits my ability to mount anything high enough to keep the hose out of my way. Which led to me draping the hose from the machine directly across to the mattress top, to my face...I almost drown. It was horrible. Spitting, sputtering and a cold wet nose. I thought I was turning into a dog.

So...If you want to avoid rainout, route the hose up a couple feet before it drops to your face. It doesn't have to be straight up, but enough to keep the heavier condensation from getting to your mask would be a good place to start. I wouldn't imagine that keeping the CPAP higher than the mattress would be an issue (it isn't for me, anyhow), so long as the hose gets routed correctly.

I'm rambling. It's been a long day. Sorry.
