Hi all,
I have complex sleep apnea and had used a bilevel Resmed machine for two months. With a recent sleep study, I had 7 events in the first 20 minutes. So I was switched to a ResMed ASV machine. I had adjusted to the bilevel well before, and expected to adjust to this machine. Not so. Last night was my first night and the high pressures I seemed to need, drove me crazy! I was, mostly, unable to sleep but did wear the mask and use the machine for over four hours. I use sleephead software and my AHI was less than 1 but the IPAP got over 21, with median of 12.54. I am very motivated to be able to use this new machine. I also need to be able to sleep! any input?
New ASV machine, pressure issues
Re: New ASV machine, pressure issues
Welcome to the ASV group.
It is in the nature of the ASV technology to have significant pressure shifts as the machine detects and treats a central event. My machine switches between 10 and 25 cm H2O when in that mode. Fortunately for me, that doesn't seem to wake me up. My prior bi-level pressures were something like 16/19.5 so the new pressures were not that much different.
I'm sure that helped.
If your report of an AHI of less than 1.0 is any indication, it is likely that you did sleep at least some and the machine is working for you. Hang in there, it will get better as your brain accomodates to the alien on your face trying to blow you up like a party balloon
In not too long a time, the pressures involved will seem quite normal and you may get to the place where you wonder if the machine is actually turned on because you are so used to the pressure you no longer notice.

Re: New ASV machine, pressure issues
JDS74 has it right. I'm 11 months in and often have to check to see if my machine is on. My pressures are 6-25 and I never used XPAP before. Hang in there.

Re: New ASV machine, pressure issues
I have been on my ASV for 2 months and at this point, I never want to use anything else. The pressure changes don't wake me up, but they usually start while I am still semi-awake, and I have come to regard them as a life-saving comfort. Maybe you can psyche yourself into a peaceful place.
Pleasant dreams!
