DME Advice? Stuffy Nose with Nasal Pillows

Post by Luthie2006 » Wed Jul 30, 2014 11:52 am

Good afternoon: I know that this topic has been touched on before. I am using the Airfit nasal pillows with the ResMed S9, Climate control hose.
I had the humidity on 70 and my DME said to turn it up higher for a less stuffy nose.
But I know I read on this site that turning it cooler is better for a stuff nose. None of the over the counter stuff works for me. But even if it did, for a less stuffy nose, should the humidity level be higher or lower? Very confused, because I know I read on here that the lower humidity is better. Thank you for the clarification.

Also can someone help me as to how to change my profile as far as equipment? I am now using the Airfit pillows. Thank you so much.

On a Resmed humidity is a choice from 0-6, 70 degrees is probably the temp of the heated hose system. I get very stuffy and use humidity of 2.5 and turn the heater off (bedroom at about 76 degrees) to "blow" my nose open and dry it. Nasal rinsing can help I've found too.

Equipment is under profile on your Control Panel and is a pull down...

Are you using the ClimateLine hose set to automatic or manual?
If you only have an option for temperature (like 70 degrees) then it is set to automatic and increasing the temp doesn't increase the humidity delivered.. When set to automatic the S9 delivers (or attempts to deliver) 80% humidity at any temperature you select.
There is a way to set it to manual so you can have control of both the temperature and humidity separately. You have to go into the clinical setup menu and change it from automatic to manual.

To edit your equipment you have to go to your user profile and then edit equipment tab which is directly under the edit profile tab.
Don't forget to click on "submit" or the changes won't stick.

My S9 has top level patient menu buttons for independent humidity and temp - is that not normal?

The factory set defaults for when ClimateLine hose is attached is for the "automatic" setting which only allows temperature control.
If yours has the 2 options for temp and humidity then the default from automatic has been changed.

Mine doesn't, at least not that I've found yet in the clinician menu. I have the basic slimline hose, not climate line.

Pugsy - I'm surprised my set up is anything other than plain vanilla. But glad

the amount of humidification that people needs varies from person to person, I use none most of the time, either no water in the chamber, or the humidifier unit not even attached... other people like it to be like slogging through a swamp...

it's whatever works best for you, try increasing, or decreasing the settings, and find your sweet spot... but you may have to readust that with different seasons of the year.

Temperature control is only available with the ClimateLine hose attached. The "automatic" setting only engages or becomes available with the ClimateLine hose attached.
When using the slimline hose (or a regular 22 mm hose) the only settings available are the 1 through 6 settings for humidity delivery.

Thank you Pugsy and everyone. When I set the humidity down to 60 degrees, it does start at that each time. So lower is better for a stuffy nose?

I'll say it again, it varies from person to person. you'll have to experiment to see what works for you.

Good. I didn't know you understood already. I will leave my comments though just in case someone new reads this thread and doesn't understand how it works.
Luthie2006 wrote: When I set the humidity down to 60 degrees, it does start at that each time. So lower is better for a stuffy nose?
Humidity needs as well as temperature needs will vary among users. There is no set in stone way to do temperature or humidity that works the same way for everyone.
All we can do is tell you to experiment and see what your nose likes the best.
My nose hates cooler temps but loves lots of moisture. Someone else's nose might hate warmer temps and higher humidity.
There is no universal right or wrong setting that works for all the population of cpap users.

It's very possible that your nose doesn't like the 80% humidity that you are getting at 70 degrees. It's also possible that your nose likes 80% but doesn't like 70 degrees.

What works for me or englandsf or pale rider or JustTia or whomever isn't necessarily what will work best for you.
We all have different preferences but each preference works for us....we have no way to know which one of us your nasal mucosa might be like or even if the nasal mucosa reacts like any of us.

You will just have to experiment with various settings to see how your nasal mucosa react to any changes you make.
Start with a reduction in temperature to see if it helps. If it doesn't then you likely need to switch over from automatic 80% humidity delivery to manual selection and start experimenting with different humidity levels along with different temp settings.
