I have a resmed S8 autoset which is 5 years old. It works well enough. I prefer to start it with the button but that wore out so I now have to start it by breathing into it. I can live with that. Insurance will pay for a new machine. Since Resmed is ok for me I would probably get an S9. I would feel safer travelling only with the older machine and knowing that I'm not in a fix if one machine breaks. On the other hand the S9 does not seem all that different. Maybe marginally quieter, I could get an H5i humidifier... also a heated hose. If I knew that there would be an S10 in 9 months (say) I'd wait. Otherwise I'm inclined to go ahead. Any thoughts?

P.S. why won't the equipment profile at the bottom show my S8. just because it is no longer for sale? Still useful info!
should I get a new machine?

Equipment choices in the drop down menu in the profile equipment page are tied to items/products sold by cpap.com.
Items that are no longer sold seem to have broken links. They used to show up in the profile but now they don't. When this happens we just suggest to people that they add the missing equipment to their comments section like you have your Goodknight mentioned.
ResMed changed the working algorithm with the S9 from what had been used with the S8 AutoSet. So there's more improvement than just it being a little more quiet and the heated hose. Since the S9 can actually distinguish between centrals and OAs now better therapy is afforded to those people whose pressure needs are over 10 cm when in APAP mode.
Don't know when the S10 will be released. ResMed keeps all that sort of stuff very hush hush. Heck it might be tomorrow...or it might be a year from now. or whatever. I am not so sure I would want the very first newest model though...newest always seems to be a bit buggy it seems like.

Re: should I get a new machine?
I also have an S8 Autoset that I have been using for almost 5 years. I really don't want the hassle with insurance so I am looking to update to an S9 out of pocket. I might be looking at one currently offered on my local Craigslist. I have been getting my daily AHI off the LCD screen and my therapy seems to be in good shape since I am averaging about 4-5. I am aware that the S8 overstates the HI numbers. I would not wait for the S10 (If there is one coming). I believe that based on what I have read, the S9 has everything I am looking for.

Re: should I get a new machine?
If you don't have a backup machine already, wouldn't it be wise to get your new machine while the old one is still working, rather than having to scramble when the old machine poops out? I hate having to do that sort of thing in an undignified scramble, and it always seems that rush purchases are more expensive/more problematic.
