A simple question on what defines being "awake"

Post by Day_Dreamer » Tue Jul 29, 2014 12:08 pm

I went to My sleep Doc Thursday and meet with the NP (what a waste of time)

I was asked "how often do you wake up during the night".

That depends on what your definition of waking up is. I replied; I wake to turn. I am only half awake but I am aware I am turning and need to guide my hose to ensure it is laying properly. I do this 3-4 times each evening. (I got a deer in the headlights look and some stuttering)

I instinctively lift the covers to let my cats in and out. (They are in and out of the covers a few times a night) I position myself to spoon with my cats. I often have no recollection of this. Only when one of them wants to be pet, is when I get the claw and wake slightly.

I wake to go to the bathroom 1-2 times.

She could not give me a straight answer!

How many times I shut my machine down during sleep time was used to define being "awake"

Would someone please help define "awake time"

Thanks in advance

I use "awake" to mean fully awake. Recently I have been turning my machine off and then back on when this happens in order to keep track. I've another condition that wakes me up at night so I'm collecting data this way.

I use "arousal" to mean I'm awake enough to turn over or adjust my pillow.

I think that no matter how 'asleep' you may feel when e.g. letting cats in and out, etc., if you're at all conscious of what you're doing or what's going on around you, you're awake (if not alert and jumping out of bed).

Hi Julie,

Wouldn't this apply to turning as well? (especially given all our equipment) Never mind reread I missed the etc... in your post

I am more awake while turning as sometimes I go to turn and find I have a cat under the covers already and no recollection of letting him in. I turned the other night only to find the hose wrapped around one of the little buggers

Yeow! Meow! Can you use a 'Hose Buddy' to keep your hose out of the way, or hook it (loosely) to the headboard, ceiling, whatever?

Nothing like a dangling object to pique kitty's interest.
Add a hose cover to make it less serpent-like.

It's a timeless question and I think the answer to that is based on what different people believe. For a part of the night, I tend to do what I call drowsing... it's sort of a stage one type of sleep(pre-REM) that often has hypnogogic elements. Here's what sleep doctors then to identify as the normal stages of sleep - I like it because it's a pretty easy to understand chart:

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

With this definition aren't we all waking up at least a few times a night? Just turning with CPAP equip attached is enough to be considered awake if we are cognizant of the event. I feel most are aware they are turning or we would have many more posts about hoses being yanked and CPAP breaking.

Everyone,

Are you aware of your equipment when turning? House placement, fit, etc.

Its usually linked to the headboard. It must have slipped a bit that night. They are well trained but have me trained even better. They are both extremely vocal (oriental breed) so if anyone was in danger or uncomfortable, I'd hear about it.

I'm not aware of turning or of my equipment. I very rarely turn or move at night & then its on the rare occasion I have to go to the bathroom. I've been on CPAP 14 years & sleep like a dead person on CPAP. I absolutely cannot sleep without it. I have been fighting an abnormal resistance to awake to an alarm. I have somehow 'learned' how to sleep thru them. Therefore I might not be a typical PAP user for comparison.
