Never heard of such a thing.
Untreated apnea is a common cause of depression, not the other way around.

Yeah, my depression went away after 2 weeks of CPAP.

That being said, if this is true, it is one hell of a misdiagnosis. People don't usually receive a top end CPAP machine for "couldn't sleep". They get one for certain kind of apnea episodes occurring during sleep studies in sufficient amount.

No rhyme or reason to what insurance pays for. When I called mine about consumables even the person I spoke to was surprised my Autoset/H5i etc was all 100% paid on pick up. But my diagnosis was way simpler - fat old guy with AHI in the 30s.

--and a usage total of a mere 47 hours means your baby was probably starving for oxygen throughout gestation--
at least while you were sleeping. I do hope his/her related developmental problems are minor, Poor child.

Could be this woman wasn't sleeping and depressed bc she wasn't delighted she was pregnant. Once the baby was born things got better for her... adorable, smiling baby and all.

We don't know her and have no idea really. The causes of depression are many and varied; not only due to untreated apnea. People who successfully treat their apnea often times are still depressed.

actually Sam may have a point so I wouldn't be too quick to dismiss her

Ive seen a few panic attack patients describe terrifying throat closing during panic attacks

"I felt like my throat was choking" was a recent descriptor used by a patient

we know the muscles of the airways are under autonomic nervous system control , why couldn't severe depression or anxiety attacks affect the airway?

How many of us have had a devastating life changing event such as the death of a child or the loss of a loved one and how did we sleep THAT night?

Let her sell her machine . Im happy for her if she has found happiness without cpap . Best wishes to you and your baby

If diagnosed during pregnancy, come hell or high water, there is no way I would only put on only 47 hours-
This would be out of concern for the health and intelligence of the baby.
Using narcotics during pregnancy is criminal-- refusing to use your cpap is not--
but maybe it should be.

I really can't believe you actually said that!
You know NOTHING about this woman yet you decide to tell her her child has developmental problems?

/shakes head

I will ask this forum once again.
WTF is wrong with some of you people?????

Denial doesn't just hurt the patient when a fetus is involved.
This is serious, and I can't pretend that such irresponsibility does not bother me.
This is for the sake of the child, and babies carried by other mothers in denial of their apnea.

This +1. My daughter died at 30 weeks gestation of a rare birth defect, even though I was doing "all the right things". I can't imagine purposely choosing to risk her life because I dislike what I have to do to be healthy.

There are some thoughts that are better left unsaid. In other words, I'm sure some people are thinking WTF is wrong with you. We are all entitled to voice our opinions -- end of story.

having followed some of shelagh's posts , i take my hat off to her because it appears she keeps an open mind

Speaking hypothetically

Assume this was a forum for people suffering from depression

A member posts that she no longer wants to go to her 6 monthly electroconvulsive therapy treatments

All her life bullied at school , parents abandoned her ,abused as a child , no friends , no love , Zilch. Menial jobs cleaning plates as a kitchen hand.

Then one day she falls madly in love with one of the diners . They marry have 3 beautiful children . She posts here that she has found true happiness for the first time in life. She conceedes she hasn't gone to her psychiatrist for years and has missed her electric shock therapy sessions. But she's never been happier. Hasn't been depressed for years.

Would we still lambast her for her stupid belief that she no longer has a "disease" called depression ? that she must be suffering from denial and inexorably her biochemical brain imbalance will rear its ugly head ?
