New to the forum

Post by Iflyacrj » Tue Jul 29, 2014 8:56 am

Hi
Just want to say I'm new to the forum. Last year, after constant poor performance at work, I was diagnosed with moderate to borderline severe sleep apnea. I didn't want to go the way of a CPAP. I looked at surgery and was told I was not a candidate as I have an usually large tongue and small airway. I was told I've had sleep apnea probably since my teens. I've always woke up tired. I just thought I wasn't a morning person and needed my coffee to keep going. I had no idea I had any sleep disorders. I never snored but other symptoms the doctor said clearly indicates I had a sleep disorder.
I've been using a CPAP now for just over a year. I don't remember ever feeling so wonderful. I don't remember ever waking up feeling good a refreshed in my entire life. I took to the CPAP very well.
Since using my CPAP, I've become a very heavy sleeper as I have slept through thunderstorms and other loud noises that wake people up. When I wake up, I have now memory of what I dreamt about.
To sum this all up, I never knew just how crappy I felt until I got my CPAP machine.
It's nice not to go around like I'm in a trance, daze or fog. And for once, people stopped thinking I was an airhead, space cadet, ADD, having the onset of dementia or senile.
Just wish to share my story.

Welcome to the world of the hose-nose. My story isn't much different from yours. Glad you took to it so well. Now sit back and learn and enjoy life.

Thanks
It was a total shock to my body. But I'm now enjoying life like I never have done before.
I never knew how bad and such destruction OSA can cause

And if you're in a regulated industry that takes such matters seiously (such as the FAA does), it's doubly important to make sure you're alert and "with it."

My boy is in the commercial aviation program at Liberty University. I presume you fly.

I fly on those planes a lot... the puddle jumpers get me from RST to MSP for flights onward, unless I'm going to INL, which is another crj puddle jumper. Welcome to the forum!

My Boy's starting on Turbine later this year which means he first needs to spend some time on the new CRJ simulator the university has. While he's thrilled about that, I'm not looking forward to paying for actual airtime when he gets behind the controls!

Hi slartybartfast, love the job did on those Norwegian fjords! Had the pleasure of hanging out with Doug Adams in the 80s - he wrote for MacUser UK which I launched in '84. Good guitarist too.

I discovered DA's writing in college when the original BBC Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy was aired on a local NPR station. Being a biochem major, and a bit of a nerd, I loved his ironic twist on life, the universe and everything. So I kept track of him, reading each book as it came out. Over the years, I've found that I was not alone. Today is yet another example.

As for the moniker, "My name . . . my name is not important," is where that comes from.

I just assumed you were Norwegian - I too have a degree in microbial biochem - which I have never used.

Yes I fly. I have a waiver to fly and keep a medical certificate.
Just have to use my CPAP. And I must show compliance. It was a hassle but I was able to get it.
Even if I take a nap, I use my CPAP machine
