Not mouth breathing exactly, but.. err.. venting?

Post by Agathorn » Thu Jul 24, 2014 1:03 pm

I find occasionally I wake up and, well i'm not sure how to explain it. I don't get the feeling that i'm trying to breathe through my mouth (and in general I don't, CPAP or not), but I wake up and its like i'm opening my mouth to try and vent or relieve some pressure subconsciously. It only happens some nights, but on those nights it seems I do it a lot.

Does this make sense to anyone?

Makes sense to me. You might try a chin strap on the nights this venting of pressure happens. You might try a FFM - just switch out when you find this happening. You've got a good setup.Good Luck

I've found myself doing this, as well. It tends to wake me up quickly (my mouth isn't terribly dry), so I just shut my mouth, roll over and go back to sleep. It doesn't happen EVERY night, or I'd try to figure out what I did with that neoprene head wrap/jaw closer thingamabob.

There's an exhalation ease feature (EPR) on your machine, so you might want to look it up and try it out.

Interesting. Unfortunately as i'm in trial right now, the loaner machine i'm using is pretty heavily locked down. I will look into it thought. Sounds interesting!

As for a chin strap or whatever, honestly i'm afraid to use one. I already have issues with mild panic attacks with my mask. Locking my mouth closed would probably freak me out even more!

you can't "lock down" an autoset, though they may have scared you into being afraid to do anything more than push the 'on' button.

try the 'setup' button and see what options you have.

Haha i'll take a look tonight. I assumed it was locked down because I played with the unit early on and didn't seem to have much of anything in the menus. But i'll do some more research tonight!

Unfortunately chin straps do not lock you down either, and in fact in many cases air is still lost between lips (which straps have no control over), so start thinking about other fixes.

I mouth breathe once or twice as I wake usually. The S9 is easy to access clinician's menu and turn on EPR. Just google it

So I found the menu. Looks like EPR is already turned on to "full time" with a level of 2, whatever that means.

There are three levels, 2 is the middle one, 3 is the highest. It means that the exhale relief will drop the pressure 2 cms as you breathe out.
