Help reading sleepyhead
Help reading sleepyhead
I am on a Vpap S9 and for the past month it's been feeling like Im suffocating. I found that my Ti settings were set at .1 and .3 after reading I changed to .3 and 2.5
I downloaded sleepyhead this week and I am seeing that my pressure is jumping up and down. Is this a problem with sleepyhead or a problem with my machine?
Thanks for your help
I really struggle with keepuing my mask on because of the feeling of suffocation. I tend to pull it off about 4hrs in when I hit REM and start having my apneas.

Re: Help reading sleepyhead
Can you turn off the mask pressure graph so that the regular pressure graph can be seen? You can do this in Preferences/graphs tab.
Can you change the left side detail so it is on the daily detailed AHI and not Events?
Can you also include the leak graph please along with flow limitation graph?
SleepyHead just reports what the machine records. Any jumping around of the graphs is because the machine is doing it.
Of concern to me is the number of centrals being flagged. Did you have many centrals mentioned during your initial diagnostic sleep study or the titration sleep study? Do you have copies of your sleep studies? If not, get them.

Re: Help reading sleepyhead
sledbet,
The vast majority of the events being scored are scored as CAs. And that's an issue that has to be looked into. Moreover, those CAs are not thickly clustered only at a time that you are likely to be awake or semi-awake.
So it's important to understand what your original sleep study results were and why you were put on the VPAP in the first place. So let's start with questions:
1) Does your original sleep study say anything at all about central sleep apnea? Does your titration study (if you had one) say anything at all about either central sleep apnea or complex sleep apnea? And how many CAs were actually scored on the diagnostic test? And how many CAs were actually scored on the titration test?
2) Did you start out with a CPAP or APAP? If so, what was the medical reason that you were switched from the CPAP/APAP to the S9 VPAP?
3) What are the clinical settings for your S9 VPAP? From the posted data, it appears that you are using either the S9 VPAP S or the S9 VPAP Auto. There's just a tiny hint that the machine is adjusting the pressure levels in response to the Hs and/or the OAs that were scored, but it's really hard to tell. So if you are using the machine in Auto mode, either the Auto range is very narrow (that's not always "bad") or the machine is not finding much to respond to.
And what exactly do you mean by "I'm suffocating"? That phrase is often used by new PAPers to describe two very different problems:
And on the nights you posted, you have over 5 hours and over 7 hours of data. So there's no evidence of "pulling the mask off "about 4hrs in". However, on 7/22 did you pull the mask off at 5:15ish and then go back to sleep maskless for a few more hours?

How did the changes in Ti settings affect the "I'm suffocating" feeling? Did it make things BETTER, WORSE, or ABOUT THE SAME?sledbet wrote:I am on a Vpap S9 and for the past month it's been feeling like Im suffocating. I found that my Ti settings were set at .1 and .3 after reading I changed to .3 and 2.5
And what exactly do you mean by "I'm suffocating"? That phrase is often used by new PAPers to describe two very different problems:
- Do you mean that you cannot get a good satisfying inhalation? In other words, the problem is that you feel as though there's not enough air coming into the mask? And in this case, the problem is usually WORSE at the start of the night when the RAMP is at its lowest pressure and the problem tends to get a bit better as the pressure increases.
OR - Do you mean that you cannot comfortably get a complete exhalation? In other words, the problem is that you feel as though there's too much air coming into the mask and the amount of air is not allowing you to fully exhale before you feel forced to start the next inhalation? And in this case, the problem is usually GETS WORSE during the RAMP period as the pressure increases.
The graph you are looking at is the "Mask pressure graph" and it shows exactly how the machine is adjusting the pressure between your EPAP and IPAP settings on each and every breath. That graph is supposed to jump up and down. The regular Pressure graph is further down the list and not shown in your screen shot. The regular Pressure graph won't repeatedly jump up and down; it will have two curves---one for IPAP and one for EPAP.I downloaded sleepyhead this week and I am seeing that my pressure is jumping up and down. Is this a problem with sleepyhead or a problem with my machine?
The posted data does not show this. The apneas scored on 7/22 do NOT seem to be REM related (at least not in my opinion). The data scored on 7/14 MIGHT show a wee bit of REM influence, but the OAs on this night are NOT "out of control"----even if they are REM-related, there are not that many of them.I really struggle with keepuing my mask on because of the feeling of suffocation. I tend to pull it off about 4hrs in when I hit REM and start having my apneas.

Re: Help reading sleepyhead
Sorry if I miss a questions And sorry it took me so long to respond
1) I was diagnosed at first with very few centrals. I think it was 3 total...however Ive noticed more and more with my machine but I dont think my DME is telling my dr this so I am requesting a new DME and will show him sleepyhead report
2) I started with CPAP about 7 yrs ago and moved to auto and then to Vpap. At first it was "suggeted I try" for mild apnea. WHen my husband saw my O2 levels he told me there was no maybe (I did just buy an O2 monitor..I will use tonight). I have memory issues due to ambien use..so forgive me for not totally remembering why Bipap but mainly because the cpap had to blow too hard and was causing lots of aerophagia
I am set at Auto 10-18
CHanging the TI has only been a couple of nights but the suffocating feeling was on exhale and that seems to be better. It felt like the machine was working against me.
I wish I had past data to see if my centrals have become worse but I only have now...hopefully I can keep machine on and get accurate results. I will say tha tmy life precpap was extreme depression..I was treated for that for 12yrs before a fluke caused the dr to check for apnea and was shocked..I had 10AHI but in REM was at 50-60
I usually pull my mask off after 4hrs...those arent the nights I ve shown because I wanted to show the most data I could. Yes I pull it off around 5am and go back to sleep
Here is last nights Data with I think what youve asked for

Re: Help reading sleepyhead
Ok Looking back at 10/12 Titration report I had 2 total centrals. My level was set at 11-15 at that time and dr changed it to 10-18
Re: Help reading sleepyhead
Quit acting like the DME is your doctor's gatekeeper. If you are concerned about YOUR therapy, then call the doctor's office YOURSELF. Seriously, you don't need to go through the DME to contact the doc. If the doc won't accept calls from patients, you need a new sleep doc, not a new DME.sledbet wrote:Sorry if I miss a questions And sorry it took me so long to respond

When you started CPAP 7 years ago, were you compliant? Or did you quit PAPing after a while and you've only recently started back with PAP on the VPAP?2) I started with CPAP about 7 yrs ago and moved to auto and then to Vpap.
And did you have the same kind of adjustment issues 7 years ago?
What is the PS setting?I am set at Auto 10-18
Was/is the suffocating feeling mainly that you could not complete your exhalation before the machine was "encouraging" or "forcing" you to inhale again? Or was it that the pressure was dropping to EPAP too soon?CHanging the TI has only been a couple of nights but the suffocating feeling was on exhale and that seems to be better. It felt like the machine was working against me.
And did you have the same kind of suffocating feeling with the CPAP and APAP that you were using before being moved to VPAP?
This is a bad habit at this point. And bad habits are notoriously hard to break, but you need to break this one. Sleeping without your PAP allows the OSA events to return, and REM sleep is much more common and the REM episodes are longer towards the end of the night---when you are typically sleeping sans mask ..I usually pull my mask off after 4hrs...those arent the nights I ve shown because I wanted to show the most data I could. Yes I pull it off around 5am and go back to sleep
It would be useful to change the left sidebar to the Details tab instead of the Events tab. We don't need to see the list of each event; we do need to see the summary data that is located both above and below the Pie Chart in the Details tab. Here is last nights Data with I think what youve asked for
My overall impression remains the same: The number and distribution of the CAs troublesome enough to say that consulting with a sleep doc (NOT a DME) is probably needed. In other words, the presence of the CAs on the machine's data needs to be brought up to a doctor.

Re: Help reading sleepyhead
Like I said--- Im learning how to get tjhe info so I have info to NOT use the DME. In the past I had to count on their reports. I had a DME who was fantastic and showed me ALL the reports. He left and a new person came in. I had no problems with him. I have an appt with sleep dr in a week.
Ive always been compliant about 4hrs . I was having issues with heart racing and feeling like I couldnt breathe. I think I was inhaling and exhaling a lot. That was abut the time I got switched to Apap
PS3
The suffoating feeling has only been on Vpap and it feels like I cant exhale a full breath (or did)
I know this is a bad habit and am trying to break it!! While learning more.
Will get a screen shot asap

Does that work or do you need the screen shot/?
Re: Help reading sleepyhead
Screen shot of the left side and what RobySue was asking for contains AHI event category breakdown and this last set of numbers data doesn't contain that data point.
Below is an example of what it looks like that we like to see. It's one of mine. I have turned off the pie chart as it isn't particularly useful for my needs. Turning the pie chart off allows the statistical numbers move into viewing range so everything that might be needed is available in one easy little screen shot.
