New to CPAP - Not sure if its even working

Post by Agathorn » Tue Jul 22, 2014 9:41 pm

Hey all,

I was encouraged to post a new topic on this issue so here it is.

I've been on my one month trial of a machine, actually its gone on about 1.5 months due to some paperwork delays. I'm now at the point I need to buy the machine if I choose to do so.

One of my main concerns right now though is that I don't even know that it is helping. I was diagnosed with mild sleep apnea after an in-home test. During that test I was recorded as having an AHI of 9, and a truly impressive 2,092 snore events. I also had an oxygen desaturation index of 11. For a further breakdown, the test sheet says 1 CAI, 8 Hypopnea.

Now i've had an absolute hell during this trial. I have always found it hard to fall asleep, and i've been going through masks like crazy and nothing really working for me. I sleep on my side and most every mask I try gets pushed around too much and starts leaking. Most of them are too loud, even the very quiet ones bother me because I can't stand the sound of my own breathing. Right now i've settled on the least annoying Mirage FX. If I tighten it down real tight, at least it doesn't shift too much when i'm on my side. The venting on it drives me batty though so I have to try and position myself just right so that the venting doesn't blow on the pillow and make a lot of noise. It isn't perfect by any means but its worked the best of any i've tried so far. The rest are all too noisy, or don't handle my side sleeping, or make it harder to breathe.

Anyway long story short, I still find it VERY hard to fall asleep with the mask and the last week i've kind of adopted a method of going to bed WITHOUT the mask because at least I can fall asleep, and then the first time I wake up I put on the mask and then I can generally fall back asleep with it.

However I am still very tired every day, and I still wake up a half dozen or more times every night.

I have been using SleepyHead to record the data from my machine, but I don't know what information or reports I can pull from it to post here to give whatever information might allow you all to help me out. I'm attaching screenshots from last nights session out of SleepyHead.

well, your autoset wants to go higher in pressure because of your flow limitations, as high as those are going, you're likely still struggling for breath.

of course, higher pressures will make a bit more noise, and make leaks worse.

mask liners help me a lot with ff and nasal masks....

that's my first thought looking at things.
