First Night on CPAP... and thanks!

Post by SleepyJohn43 » Thu Apr 17, 2014 3:04 pm

...and I have very little to gripe about.

I slept 7 solid hours last night. Woke up at 5:45am without an alarm... which is UNHEARD of for me.

It took a bit longer than usual for me to get to sleep, but it was under an hour because I dont remember the radio (which is on a timer) shutting off.

The mask and hose were not a problem. I almost forgot they were there when I woke up. I did have the sensation that air was being pumped into my stomach or diaphragm as I was waking up, but a small burp cleared it out.

The real news is that I feel pretty good today. Not bouncing off the walls fabulous, but I feel an improvement in how much clearer my mind is. For the first time in a long time, I feel like I'm in control.

I'd like to give a shout out to all of the folks who contribute to this site. It is a real asset. I have learned so much. From getting ready for my sleep study, to dealing with the DME supplier, and to get a general comfort level for the therapy, I was prepared. I can tell that this is going to make a huge impact on my life, and I'd like to thank you all for making this forum the asset that it is!

Congratulations. Sounds like you are taking to this therapy like a duck to water and that's really good.
If you can already tell such a marked improvement...I am pea green with envy.

Great news! May it always be so, but don't be discouraged if over time your machine needs adjusting or you need a mask change. It really amazed me how my brain had forgotten what it was like to wake up refreshed.

Keep on keeping on. Don

Thank you so much, Pugsy! But don't be too envious. The road to get here was very long. My symptoms were very scarily similar to a heart attack, so I have been in the ER about a half dozen times in the last 2.5 years and my weight steadily went up from 190 to 225. During that time, I was diagnosed with:

GERD (Pill #1)
Non-specific heart problems. Not sure what it was, but they had a pill to fix it. (Pill #2)
High Blood Pressure (This shares Pill#2)
General Anxiety Disorder (Pill #3 and #4 and counseling)
IBD (I got a backwards pill for that #5)

In that time, I have given up:

Alcohol (not that I really drank that much to begin with)
Caffeine (I do miss my coffee so much)
SCUBA and Woodworking (because of the obvious dangers of doing these when you are in a fog)

I know that everyone has their own road that they have traveled, and I dont think that mine is any better or worse than anyone else's, but I truly feel like I am coming out of a personal hell. And it feels so good.

It's day 3 on CPAP and again, I woke up feeling refreshed after 7 hours of solid sleep.
I met my parents for breakfast this morning and felt bright, alert, and able to hold a conversation and be positive.

These last 3 days have been extraordinary relative to what I have been used to, and I just hope that it is not an aberration.
