Intestinal gas

Post by ladyjanern » Thu Apr 17, 2014 2:21 pm

Yes I said it! I have intestinal gas and bloating.

Has anyone had this problem with swallowing air while being on CPAP? I have been having increased abdominal bloating with regard to excess gas which is causing a great deal of discomfort. I strongly feel I am taking in excess air during CPAP treatment.

Currently I am on a nasal pillow and tape my mouth. I am a mouth breather and have not had luck with the big bulky FFM. During the night I wake and often take both the mask and tape off and fall back to sleep. My jaw probably opens and I spend the rest of the night taking in more air. My pressure is set at 9

I could take Gas X or some other OTC treatment but would rather get to the root of the problem. Has anyone had this problem or have any tips to decrease this from happening.

Do a forum search for aerophagia - loads of info to look at!

wiki/index.php/Aerophagia

in addition to general forum search for aerophagia take a look at the above link.
There are some things that can be done to help reduce or eliminate the annoying aerophagia symptoms.
Sometimes it will lessen on its own without doing anything but for some people it doesn't.
Sometimes a minor pressure adjustment (downward) helps a lot, sometimes using EPR or if already using EPR increasing the EPR setting helps.
So if not using EPR you might add EPR relief to things to see if it helps. If you are already using EPR at 3...then that idea of course won't work.

Even with mouth taped so that a person isn't doing any mouth breathing some people will have air go into the esophagus and the little sphincter at the esophagus/stomach junction lets the air sneak into the stomach. It just happens.

Had that issue when I first started straight Cpap years ago. A switch to autopap and exhale relief cured it. Good luck!

Gas in your lower tract, but not in the stomach?
maybe it's NOT swallowed air.
If you take a proton pump inhibitor (usually for GERD) a side effect is
an imbalance in the good bacteria in your lower digestive tract--causing abundant gas.
No fair, and not much choice.
