Do I need a copy of my prescription to bring my machine on a plane?

AFAIK, normally not. But if you're travelling internationally it can be useful - i've been asked for it a couple of times outside of the US (as a security measure), though more and more they know what a CPAP is.

you want to check with your airline, not all seats have power... and some have tight restrictions on battery size as other posts have discussed. In business class I have no trouble using my machine. Int he back of the plan typically I can not use it.

To "bring" on a plane...or...to "use" on a plane?

Just bring it on, I was told it wouldn't be counted as a carryon

That is right, but with one potential pitfall. Don't toss anything unrelated to CPAP into your carrying case. The airline may count it as a carry on if you have stuffed that extra pair of socks that wouldn't fit into the suitcase into the CPAP bag.
