I feel better without my CPAP

Post by Rkl » Wed Apr 16, 2014 11:02 am

I have been trying to be compliant with my CPAP for over a year. Was diagnosed with moderate sleep apnea with pressure at 7. Been through several masks and headgear and finally settled on the Swift fx nasal pillow. No leaks no apnea with this but I can't sleep. I fall asleep after taking ambien, but wake up in the middle of the night unable to go back to sleep. I have a terrible headache every morning and have tried no humidifier and using a humidifier to see if there's a difference. There's not. I feel like crap from lack of sleep and have recently stopped wearing my CPAP and actually feel better not wearing it. I never felt any difference after starting to wear this thing. No increase in energy at all. Anyone else out there experiencing similar issues? Will see my Dr. In June and discuss with him then.

Please join the forum or at least tell us what equipment you're using and the settings.
I can think of a number of things offhand that are probably affecting your therapy, but we need some info before making suggestions.

Maybe it's the Ambien--some of the side effects of drugs run counter to what you take them for.
Klonopin use also seems to have a connection with insomnia issues--as in not really helping some patients.
If it's been a long time since your doctor has evaluated this drug's effect on you,
perhaps it is time to switch to something else--or cut back (with your doctor's approval)

Please do give the information requested above. It will take an in-depth look to see if maybe your treatment has not been optimized and therefore not giving you all the support you need. Otherwise we're just talking in generalities that may or may not apply to your situation. One of those generalities that comes to mind is if you might have a problem with limb movements. Were they mentioned on your sleep study reports, and is your sleep restless?

I agree. The help here is phenomenal. One thing that happened with me. I also could not get used to cpap. For whatever reason, some me, I just couldn't. After trying for a while, my doctor said well would you like me to order an auto pressure machine. Uh, yes please. And while I am still in the process, it is not making me feel like I am at the end of a car wash blower anymore.

This whole thing is a process tho. It takes time to accept our reality, time to figure out what settings are best for us, what masks allow us the most effective treatment with comfort. I gave up too soon and spent more years untreated then I had to. Now I know a process means just keep doing it because the answer will be at the end of action taken and not the action stopped.

I'm using Remstar auto, humidifier, FX Nano Nasal Pillows and pressure of 7. Had my chip analyzed and perfection except I'm not getting any sleep. No leg movements detected during sleep study. My Dr. tried me on Trazadone to help me sleep, but no matter how low the dose felt like a zombie the next day. Anyone else out there experiencing headaches? I've adjusted my humidifier up and down and have even removed it. Still headache every morning .

It doesn't sound like you are downloading your data yourself. Who proclaimed "perfection"? Depending on who did it, it could just mean they think you are "using" the machine for the specified number of hours per night. Did they give you a copy of the report? Does it show AHI, leaks, snores, etc.?

Some of what you're saying could be attributed to leaking air out your mouth (the headaches) and losing your therapy air.
Or, it could be that your therapy pressure may be insufficient.

Info downloaded by pulmonologist and yes I have a copy. No leaks and no apneas. Pressure is adequate.

What does your headache feel like... Does it hurt in your sinuses or around the back of your head? For how long after waking? Is it absent when you sleep without the machine?

I'm a bit confused about the report you have a copy of from your doctor. I've never seen anyone have "no leaks and no events" over the long term. Was that a one night report or a summary of a period of time? If it is more than one night, I'm wondering if that data was even selected for the report. Are you checking the data on your machine in the mornings to see if there's any variation? That seems to me to be a good idea. If your therapy is indeed that effective, seems something else must be going on. Do you have copies of both your diagnostic study and the titration study? I'd be interested in you reading on the titration report that there are no limb movements. Are you on any other meds besides the one for sleep? If you could post copies of any reports (blocking out personal identifiers) maybe someone could pick up a clue. A year is a long time to be continuing with poor sleep. My heart goes out to you and I hope you find answers. If you don't find resolution here, another sleep study may be in order. In my opinion, another study with no machine or another titration would likely be a waste of time. You may want to ask your doctor to order a sleep study with you using the machine at your prescribed and proven effective pressure to see what else is going on. If you decide to go that route, I'd call and ask for it sooner than your June appointment. Maybe get it in time to have the results for that June visit. it's not like you've just started this and haven't tried different masks or had time to adjust. It's past time for answers. Gotta get some sleep.

Again, please register and select your equipment--text, not icons.
We will be able to see what you are dealing with and then share how some of us handled it.
It really is very important.

Wow, I'm very suspicious of a report like this. NOBODY has "no leaks, no apneas". Even the best of us in treatment have SOME apneas (even people who are not diagnosed with apnea can have up to 5 events per hour). That's the kind of report we've seen from people who turned out to have a machine that didn't really have efficacy data--in other words a LIE by the DME or doctor who only pretended "read" the card for anything but compliance data so they could get paid.

I'm NOT accusing YOU of lying, but the report you got from either your DME or doctor is very suspicious!

Well I'm still trying to update my eg. But just for a little background I'm a Registered Respiratory therapist, recently retired. My husband is a Pulmonologist with 3 certified Sleep Medicine/pulmonologists in his practice. So there are qualified physicians who looked at my last data. The nasal pillows I'm now using have provided me with no leaks even when sleeping on my side. It's true and pretty phenomenal considering everything else I tried leaked when I moved. I just can't sleep unless I'm knocked out on ambien and that's not keeping me asleep through the night. It's been a year and I just want to start feeling like a human being.
