Traveling to Italy - backpack for CPAP?

Post by Pualani » Tue Apr 15, 2014 10:48 pm

Going to Italy and Switzerland this summer. My friend has this backpack for his CPAP and computer

High sierra elite business daypack

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00GNG ... d_i=507846

He likes it cause it zips in half and doesn't have to take anything out when going through security. Anyone have a better suggestion? I'm just a little concerned that it will be too heavy for my 60ish shoulder and back. I do have a rolling makeup size bag that would work but will also have a rolling suitcase. Husband thinks it's too much luggage. We are staying at least 5 days At Each place, mostly big hotels so hoping the electricity will be more reliable than a B&B possibly in older construction. Traveling by train in Switzerland but renting a car in Italy. We will be in the Piemonte area.

I know I need a copy of the prescription, and will need an adapter. Traveled to Rome in 2011 without any problems. Any advanced tips? Thanks

Make sure the pilot and navigator are happy people, and passed a nut check.

Tumi makes some good stuff. Here's a check-point friendly backpack with scroller wheels that might work.

A little steep price-wise. Also wondering how that handle sticking out the top works with one's neck and the back of one's head?

Knowing what I know now, I would use a carry-on size suitcase like the flight attendants use and not a back-pack. Always travel with wheels, always.

I think whether you have to open or remove items is not a function of the luggage style but of the mood of TSA and the location.

with another shoulder bag (or more) you can use a bungy cord to tie on a bag with wheels

Yes, the Tumi looks wonderful but a little pricey. Maybe I can find something similar.

Thanks Julie! Love your kitty pic. We do have a couple of train trips and I don't want to be separated from that bag with CPAP. Concerned it might not fit in train overhead. Something soft sided might fit better.

Bungie cord - excellent idea.

I'm hoping I can get my nasal problems cleared up and may not need CPAP. Yeah!

I think this is the Samsonite bag I have

Thanks all.

I always used a variety of back packs. The body doesn't like shoulder bags, it wants the weight distributed evenly. It is not your shoulders that are the problem but your abdominal muscles which keep your body up right. You can get a folding wheeled little thing which will hold you suitcase and whatever together with bungy cords. I travelled by plane, bus and on foot with one of those things in the past when everything was not wheeled. Currently I have a backpack I picked up in Staples for about $35. It has a laptop pocket, space for my cpap and accessories, a book, my knitting, all my meds. camera and laptop accessories, lunch and snack and slippers.

There are tons of bags for SLR cameras (big professional cameras), and they are roughly the same size and shape as a CPAP machine - with the millions of various photography back packs, perhaps one like that would be good? As they are also padded too!
Machine: REMStart System One Series 60 APAP with Heated Tube
Mask: F&P Simplus with PAD-A-CHEEK (Excellent may I add)
Humidifier: System One Series 60
Accessories: PR S1 'Vanity Plate', CPAP hose holder & a sanitary towel borrowed from my wife

Someone suggested SLR camera bags. I would avoid nice camera bags because they send a message that valuables are inside. The risk of theft is very high in Italy, especially while using public transportation (trains/buses/subways.) I would choose a bag that doesn't look like it contains valuables. If you have a "medical equipment" tag on the bag during your flights, I would hide the tag after boarding your flight.

I love to travel in Italy and Europe. I also have nice camera equipment. I use a tote bag that looks sort of beat up. I put foam padding inside it to safeguard my cameras.

Enjoy your trip!

Hehe, yes avoid ones with brands like 'Lowe Pro' and other top end ones! But generic looking bags for photography are very common(Photography is more popular than CPAP as a hobby). Even as an x pro photogprapher - I used to avoid branded bags when in public for the same reason (except when shooting alone or hiking in a group of friends, as admittedly they are slightly better)

Also, try not to get it too big, what ever you get, as in Italy (which is 93km away from me here in Malta), every one wears their bag on the front (not back), as petty crime like pick pocketing is very common.

Some good / safe ones I use in Italy are Pac Safe (its a brand form the states, so it should be cheaper for you guys). Wearing your bag on your back will make you look like a tourist, attracts thieves, and is easier for them. So do bear that in mind! If you do visit Malta tho - that is very safe. In fact - a recent pick pocket (who was caught) made the front page in the national newspaper!

I saw Hello Kitty roll-ons and bags at Target.
Always thought it would be cute to use kiddy luggage for my expensive stuff.

I travelled in Europe and Asia with Nike backpack. Transparant very light backpack. People can see through what is inside the backpack: Tablet, CPAP (usually no humidifier when travelling), water bottle, power bar, chargers for smartphone and tablet and medication. When people can see what you are carrying, it is much safer . Bought this backpack in Nordstrom Tacoma, WA for $30

In the last 7 years, I have never need to display my prescription and was only inquired once about my CPAP in China.
