Teeth misalignment due to CPAP

Post by Tom D. » Fri Apr 04, 2014 4:16 pm

Hi,

I've been using a CPAP (ResMed C-Flex with a swiftLT nasal pillow) for about 9 years now. I did not have a gap in my upper two front teeth prior to using the CPAP. I have about an 1/8 inch gap now and my bite is being affected. I'm reasonably sure the CPAP has caused the problem. The pressure point of the mask is just under the nose and has caused my two front teeth (and adjacent teeth) to 'buck' out.

I'm deeply grateful to have the machine and want to keep it. Sleeping is impossible without it. I'm just curious if others have also encountered this problem. I'd also be interested if anyone has advice for a mask change.

Thanks,

Tom D

I'm new to this, so can't speak to tooth misalignment. I've also only spent one night with the AirFit p10, but I can say that it never once touched my upper lip or put any pressure there, not even when I was laying on my back. I'm coming off the Nuance to the AirFit and the Nuance is an excellent mask, but it did put pressure on my upper lip when I was on my back where the AirFit does not.

Tom, I had the same thing, only with my bottom two center teeth. I have been on cpap for twenty years. My dentist told me the movement of my bottom teeth is due to deterioration of the ligaments holding the teeth to the bone, a function of age. He showed me on an x-ray. I don't know if the same thing might be happening to you. Good luck.

Anyone experiencing movement of their teeth should at least ask their dentist about a retainer to wear with cpap.

Tom,

Search for 'teeth moving' & you will find several posts on this subject. I posted this question soon after I found this forum, just not soon enough to keep me from the 'braces & other dental work' club.

Depending on the amount of movement, you may be able to have that gap closed with a retainer device, then have a permanent retainer made to sleep in nightly. I wasn't that lucky, I'm in the middle of expensive dental work to correct the damage. After that I will sleep with a retainer the rest of my life.

See your dentist ASAP.

I thought I was going crazy. I had good teeth and the CPAP caused a very noticeable gap in my top front teeth....very emabarassing. Wish CPAP companies would start warning people to see a dentist and get a retainer. I cannot afford the dental work to correct mine and it has made want to go only to work and home as it looks really bad. For anyone reading this please see a dentist now before the shifting begins. I also have a lot up pain due to the shift making all my top teeth very tight due the shift in the middle....a good 1/8". But I have to breath so I must use the machine

IMO, these problems are mostly due to using the wrong size mask--Or the wrong mask entirely.
This problem would nudge the acquisition of a different mask into the zone of medical necessity.
A doctor's LMN should trump the insurance company's schedule.

Not necessarily CF. Jencat has written extensive posts about how using cpap caused massive problems with her teeth even though she had the right mask.

But you're right, mask size can be an issue also. I could definitely tell with various masks that due to the problem with fit and the way they were pushing hard on my upper mouth area, that if I had worn them long term, there is no doubt in my mind I would have had problems with teeth.

I had the same problem, realized it, and changed masks. Problem solved--for me.
While I was using masks that were nearly right, I swapped masks every few days to reduce trauma.
Luckily, I am a survivor of orthodontia, and am sensitive to how "not quite right" feels.

Daisy,

Perhaps you could still get a retainer. With time this could possibly close the gap at least some. At the very least it will keep them from moving further.

CF,

Mine wasn't caused by the mask fit, but by a high pressure (19 straight CPAP). I'm now on auto & my pressure is lower for most of the night.

Jen

Interesting, I was just going to post about how my jaw is not closing on my right side. My back two teeth seem to be getting locked and I can't touch the top and bottom together. I think it's because my mask is to tight and creating this condition. But if I loosen it my mask leaks.
I take it off and I have to work a bit to close my teeth together. It might be I am getting air in their. Could I be leaking air into my ear canal?
As I g
Close my teeth I can feel pressure in my jaw/ear release.
Only happened twice, but two out of the last three nights????

See a dentist to find out what he thinks - you don't know for sure that the mask is related (or only may be incidentally).

Yes, definitely. The mirage Quattro caused my teeth on the bottom to shift from pressure lying on my right side. I have crowding on one side and a food catching gap on the other. I'm using the whisp now, no pressure on my teeth.

When I got my new machine, I also got a different mask, the Quattro Air. That mask definitely pushes my bottom teeth. Using it 7.5 hours or more a day would clearly cause problems over time. Would be like wearing a retainer at night.

After using it 3 days in a row, my bottom teeth started to feel sore in the morning.

I use it occasionally, but use the HC432 instead most of the time which fits under my chin.

I will check with the dentist. But my jaw gets better after a few minutes wth the mask off. It's too tight when I go to sleep. I think I need to make sure my jaw is in a good position when i strap it. Maybe i am a good candidate for jaw surgery. My ahi was its lowest with my jaw slightly adjusted.
