Coughing and gagging when wearing cpap

Post by lolita2013 » Mon May 13, 2013 2:07 pm

I have been waking up at night a couple of hours after wearing my cpap, coughing. My throat and mouth so dry that it makes me gag. I have severe allergies, on meds and take shots. Anything helpful for this problem? I'm not congested in either chest or nasal passage.
Thanks

For your allergies I recommend using an air purifier. You will not have the inflammatory effects of an allergic reaction making your breathing much easier and much more clearer and comfortable

I purchased mine from http://www.amazon.com/Winix-WAC9500-Ult ... r+purifier

250$ is a lot but I do think it is worth it, read the reviews

I have pollen allergies, as they affect me through the day, it goes away during night. This air purifier works wonders. You will notice a huge improvement Day 1

Try turning up the humidity, using distilled water (if you aren't already),
and use a superfine filter instead of the standard filter.

(This is the one for my machine--I don't know what you would need)
I am assuming you washed and dried your mask and hose already, and let them air out from being sealed in their packaging.
Some people are sensitive to the temporary outgassing of chemicals from plastics and silicone.

I also have severe allergies and asthma and am on shots. I have seen a lot of allergy talk on CPAPtalk, but not much discussion on minimizing allergies. I use the ultra-fine filter on my CPAP machine. I run a Honeywell 50250 HEPA filter in my bedroom 24/7, keep the door closed, and the vent closed. You can smell the difference in the air when you walk in my bedroom. My pillow, comforter, mattress, and box springs are sealed with dust mite-proof covers. I change my sheets every five days. There are no curtains or rugs in my bedroom, I brush my hair before bedtime, and I change clothes outside my bedroom. All this may sound like over-kill, but it is the difference between non-stop allergy/asthma trouble and almost none. But I DO cough/gag when first putting on the CPAP and sometimes later in the night. I am using the humidifier and don't have dry mouth or nose. I am interested in replies to your post.

Thanks everybody for the advice! I will take measures to make the air "cleaner" in the bedroom. I changed all my hoses/nasal pillows/filters/water (yes, i use distilled) out last night and I had a much better night. Wore it all night, no coughing.

Just started with the coughing and gagging in the last three weeks. Only get this way when I first put it on. Nasal passages seem to block up, and heavy drainage. Can't breath pressuse to high. turn ramp on this will help sometime.

anybody get an ideas

On our local news (Wisconsin)...the forecaster noted that this years pollen was several time higher than last year. He said this would be a "miserable" spring for allergy sufferers.

Very timely topic. Yes, allergies are very bad. I, too, do the gamut of allergy/asthma measures, including this air purifier: http://www.air-purifier-power.com/newp ... eview.html . I buy it through Sam's club for $185 or so.
Other measures that I use are encasing each with it's owen allergy cover: mattress, box spring/base, pillows, etc. It's a pain, but not breathing well as we all know, is a huge pain. Good Luck.

In addition to the dry mouth; if you have drainage the machine could be pushing it all to your throat...yuk..i know....I use a Netti Pot to help flush out the passages when my allergies kick up.

Is it possible you are breathing thru your mouth? You might try a chin strap.

This also happens to me and I've just had to turn over on my other side and for some reason it helps me. I am also an allergy and asthma suffer taking shots.
