just stop breathing

Post by tjc » Mon Jan 17, 2005 8:41 pm

Hi everyone. This is my first time here. I am going for a study next week. My problem is that when I am first falling asleep, in that twilight state, I just stop breathing. I just "forget" to breathe. Now, I don't know if it is happening once I'm asleep or not. I think this sounds like Central Sleep Apnea, but I'm not sure. Also, recently, I have been developing chest pains, and they happen during the day, but also at night, at the exact moment I stop breathing and wake up.( A year ago, when apnea started, the MD said I had PVC's.) Anyone hear of a link between the two? And yes, there have been times (rarely) when it seems like I "forget" to breathe during the day, and take a deep gasp in.

Wow hang in!! you feel like crap I bet!! I used to do the same be half awake half asleep and then have pain in my chest and jolt awake. From what I understand even though its scary when you're half awake half asleep your in a actual sleep stage or state. From what I read you definatly have apnea your doing the best thing in the world by being tested. Being tested as I think back laughing is quite an experience but you'll get through it.

I just had my tests this week and it is all rather uneventful. They attach a bunch of monitors to you and tell you to sleep as you normally would. It feels a bit uncomfortable at first, but eventually you fall asleep. It can be a tad embarassing when someone you don't know sees you in the morning to unhook all of the monitors, but it is well worth as you move closer to having a good nights rest. When I went back for my second study to ascertain what machine I will need, I got the first glimpse of what sleeping must feel like. I only remember waking once during the night. I didn't have the life-changing, restful feeling that I read some experience, but I didn't fade as early in the day as I usually do. Best of luck with the study!

Oh, and I've done the "stopping breathing while awake" thing as well. Your probably in such a state of fatigue your body is momentarily shutting down. At least that is what the specialist I have told me. Ask your doctor to be sure.

Thanks for the replies and tips everyone. Sleep study was embarrasing. I was so overtired that I eventually freaked out from lack of sleep, asked the technician to unwire me, and called my husband to come and get me. He was not to happy to say the least! (lmao, it was 12am!). Anyway, gonna try it again in a couple of weeks, its the next time I have 2 days off together. If I'm not completely insane, or in a coma by then! Good luck to e-1. They need to have a sleepy face emoticon!
