Newly Diagnosed

Post by sleep-a-deep » Tue Jul 02, 2013 6:45 pm

Hey gang. I've been lurking since my 6/14 sleep study. I'm scheduled for a titration study on 7/15. The most difficult result for me was finding out that I have primarily central apneas... the doc was unsure if that was because the gear wasn't picking up OSA's or if my bonehead brain isn't sending the "breathe" signals.

Here's the results:

Total time sleeping: 261 minutes
Sleep efficiency: 59.2
REM sleep: 4.4%
Stage 3: 63 minutes
AHI: 54.7
Obstructive Apneas: 1
Central apneas: 140
Hypopneas: 95
Worst O2 saturation: 74%
Mean O2 saturation: 92.7%
"Worstening in the supine position."

Unfortunately, she couldn't send me home with the gear until I have the titration study. I've learned a lot here and look forward to getting this show on the road. To quote Foghorn Leghorn: "My lungs crave air!"

Welcome!

Waiting once diagnosed was the worst for me. This forum made great use of my time though as I was able to educate myself on how this new life was going to work, as well as how to deal with my doctor, DME, and prepare for titration study.

I think this is the hardest time for me as well. I know of the potential benefits and want to get on the hose ASAP because I think I am paying a price in quality of life. However, I am just happy to be moving forward with assessment and treatment. I think this could be a life changer for me.

I thought I would provide a quick update. After the severe apnea diagnosis in June I returned for the titration study in mid-July. Yesterday I brought home a ResMed VPAP Adapt, humidifier, heated hose, and ResMed Quattro FX full-face mask. I really struggled last night... it reminded me of the horrendous titration experience, but I stuck with it as much as I could. I got 4.4 hours and an AHI of 5.1, down considerably from initial study. First night done!

I think it's going to take a little while for me to adjust to sleeping with a hurricane blasting my windpipe. But I'm committed to figuring this out for my health and my future.

Hey team. I thought I would post an update. I have been using my machine every night since I brought it home. It was brutal at first; however, eventually I got used to it. The best thing I did was getting away from a full-face mask to nasal pillows. Once I started using the Philips Resperonics Nuance Pro my sleep improved immediately.

A couple of days ago I got a call from my sleep doc saying I have averaged 0.7 AHI since I began approximately 1 1/2 years ago. I can't sleep without it even though it's tough when I am congested.

Thanks for your initial support and I wish you all well in your sleep-related endeavors.

Why does your doctor have to give you this information...You can get it off of your machine any time you want.

I don't recall saying I was dependent on my doc for this information. She requested my SD card and her office called with results. It's called a milestone.
