Buy cpap masks and machines without prescription?

Post by eeckel » Sun Nov 25, 2012 6:36 am

I was just browsing Amazon to see if I could order bella loops. I see they have some cpap masks, mask parts and some cpap machines that are sold "prescription free". How can this be? Aren't there some legality issues here?

You do need a prescription to purchase machines and masks. Whenever I have looked a amazon, I have never seen complete masks...they show masks, but they are selling parts, frames, cushions, headgear, etc. I have seen humidifiers , but never machines advertised.

I see what you mean about the masks. You have to buy the headgear and mask separately. But what about these machines? Are they missing important parts?

I don't know if these are complete units...but...the Sleepstyle 200 is available at cpap.com for under $400 with free shipping...AND customer support. These do not look like "deals".

I'm not interested in buying one of these machines. I'm asking if its legal to sell them this way?

The SleepStyle looks like a basic brick - no ability to download efficacy data. The ZZZ-PAP looks like it might be a useful machine, but not sure about the price. Worth shopping around.

Technically....probably not legal but maybe there is a RX verification somewhere in the process of ordering that we don't see. Though I did go through the checkout procedure a while back through Amazon up to the point of actually paying and I never got a prompt to supply RX.

I have purchased masks with a rx, but haven't tried to purchase a machine. Cpap.com won't sell without a rx, but some of the site will, just google & check the sites. I have bought from one that sells first then asks for a rx in their packaging, after you reieve the mask.

Such nonsense from government that prescriptions are required for CPAP machines.

How about requiring a prescription for a bicycle helmet, a bottle of aspirin, a hot-water bottle, a neti pot, a thermometer, medical tape and gauze, toothpaste? All have more potential dangers than CPAP equipment.

How do we get into so many messes and create such a regulatory state?

It's not about protecting the patient, it's about protecting the profit margins of the medical mafia.

However, if CPAP machines were available without prescriptions, insurance would probably refuse to pay for them.

Me, I'm just hoping civilization doesn't collapse completely before I die. I'm beginning to worry it won't.
