OT......The Bomb

Post by LSAT » Thu Aug 06, 2020 9:30 am

It was 75 years ago today that the US dropped the Atomic Bomb on Japan. This lead to the surrender of the Japanese
and VJ Day on August 15, 1945 which officially ended WWII.

Truman dropped a bomb the next day and told the emperor if they didn't surrender he would drop a bomb every day and the emperor surrendered. The emperor didn't know we only had two bombs, nice bluff.

As shocking as the effect was, it ended the war quickly, probably sparing millions of lives--
on both sides.
The emperor was one stubborn SOB.
He would have sacrificed almost anything.
I suspect he capitulated because he feared his own people would turn on him.
Or the next bomb would be aimed at his bunker.
We were still seen as the bad guys over there--see Grave of the Fireflies.

The bombs probably saved millions of lives—both American and Japanese. The Japanese military was ready to fight to the last man if the islands were invaded and the civilian death toll would have been horrendous . Anyone who claims dropping the bombs was wrong doesn’t know WWII history

While the bombing of Hiroshima on August 9th was an extreme event, that is viewed as excessive by many, I believe that history proved that extreme methods were completely warranted.

Why? because even after Hiroshima was bombed, the war continued.

It wasn't until Nagasaki was bombed, three days later, that the 'point' was made.

Now, if the Japanese had surrendered after the first bombing, then I think a point could have been made that bombing Hiroshima was needless... but they didn't.

It has already passed, again without any mention from our wonderful news media but who
- remembers the day that Iraq invaded Kuwait?
- remembers where they were when they heard it?
- I had never heard of Kuwait never mind where it is/was
- nor did I have any idea how much it would affect my life or the world I live in.
- who remembers how we supported Iraq in the years before during the Iran/Iraq war?

Do you have an actual point, or are you just babbling?

I suspect the latter.

My comment about unpopularity referred to the Gulf war.
After Korea and Vietnam, people finally realized there is nothing noble about war.
As if there ever was--but Hollywood consciously helped with recruitment following WWII.

And my comment was to simply point out that this thread is also about war, unpopular or not you are talking about it. War is part of the history of the civilized world. Please don't misunderstand me - my theory is there are no winners in war but we must not forget what brought them on either. We can't tear down that statue.
