What do you do with long hair and CPAP?

Post by TiredTooLong » Sun Aug 12, 2012 9:01 am

I have long hair and find that I need to pull it up in a ponytail on the top of my head in order to deal with the CPAP straps. I tried without putting the hair up and it slipped and slided. What do you other ladies do with your long hair?

Ponytail or braid. I don't mind having it pulled back.

I have shoulder length long hair. I've been using the Swift FX nasal pillows mask for almost two years. I've just let the headgear slide around since I've been able to get a good seal regardless of how much the straps move around. Some people have put a bit of the hook-side of velcro on the back (cloth) strap of the Swift FX headgear to help anchor it in place. Some people use bobby pins.

And then there are the new Bella Loops that are an alternative headgear for FX pillows. I've recently bought a pair and my hair adores the Bella Loops---they loop around the ears under the hair. I've written about them here.

How about a kufi cap over a loose bun or braid?
Rag rollers, even!

I braid mine and wear a buff sometimes on top so my hair doesn't get stuck in the Velcro when I am adjusting it. ( think, Survivor if you aren't sure what a Buff is).

Yes, Kufi nitted cap could be the solution as those olympics swimmers ladies had.

It also prevents all the straps of a mask and a chinstrap to slide off the head.

Ponytail between the two back straps on the headgear.

Here is a link to what I use. They are super stretchy and thin so they are great.

Thanks for the replies. While very cool, I don't think either the Kufi or Buff would work for me because my head sweats before anything else and I think it would get too hot. May have to stick to ponytail.

What about an old fashioned cotton or linen handkerchief? That would be very breathable.

I usually take a shower at night so I put mine in a loose, floppy bun. I had to start doing that because I kept waking up every night and finding that my hair was getting stuck and ultimately in my mask. I woke up with a tickle sensation and what I thought was just the air was my own hair pricking me! lolol

I wonder if you could buy a naked wig base.
They are stretchy mesh--maybe cooler than solid fabric.

My guess is that those who complain about sweaty head at nights don't have air conditioned bed rooms, or they cover them selves with heavy blankets. When we sweat then our heads provide one third of the task of cooling our bodies. That's why I posted the above. My room is at 80 degrees F, but air conditioned. I do sweat a bit on my face b/c of the chinstrap. I wonder if loosely knitted chinstraps are available.

Loose bun which then goes between the top and bottom strap. It holds the mask in place nicely.
