Closed MRI
I have a closed mri scheduled. Already went through it half way freaked out. They will be giving me Ativan to take before I go. I’m scared of taking it due to me having sleep apnea. I’m told it relaxes you everywhere. The “flap” is what I’m scared of blocking my airway since I’ll be laying flat. Other meds have done this to me. I can’t get my dr to understand that sometimes the “flap” feels swollen as it is. I have to do closed. I’ve asked about the open. Any advice? I don’t have the option to not take the mri either. Might sound childish but I’m just worried. Thank you.

Re: Closed MRI
I found a web page that might reassure you:
https://info.iowaradiology.com/what-sho ... on-for-mri
(Though why your doctor won't talk with you about this beats me.)
What I take away is that you will feel relaxed, but you will not be sedated.
I've had closed MRIs, and the best tip I can give you is to close your eyes and keep them closed. Try listening to all the banging that the machine produces as though it were some kind of wild contemporary jazz performance. OK to give it a bad review! And meanwhile focus on your breathing, keeping it nice and even.
Very best of luck to you.

Re: Closed MRI
When I've had an MRI they ask what kind of music and give you headphones.
I've had a dental procedure where I had No Recall but the doc said I was able to follow his directions - it was Versed I think.
IMO an MRI is so much better than what they used to do - "Exploratory Surgery" - cut you open just to look around?
Think Star Trek - which is said to have inspired the development of the MRI, cordless & cell phones, etc.
How William Shatner Changed the World.

Edit: I don't know what the medical problem is they are looking for but it sounds like its time to find another doctor.

Re: Closed MRI
I agree with close your eyes and keep them closed! I accidentally opened mine once and freaked out. Had to have them pull me out and start over. Once I made sure my eyes were closed, I did OK. Another thing that helped was I had them talk to me every few minutes. I think the MRI is done in sections of some kind. They would say, "That one is done. The next one is ____ minutes long." It helped keep me oriented and made me feel less alone so was less scary that way (compared to a previous one where nobody spoke and I had no idea what was going on). Eyes closed and keeping in verbal contact with the technician enabled me to get through about 4 of them without medication. And I am insanely claustrophobic.

You'll be alright. As was previously stated, it relaxes you, not put you to sleep. The medical field has come a long way. nowadays they give you some good tunes.... play some ZZ Top... and plaster some relaxing scenes to look at. Hopefully they'll play "Cheap Sunglasses!

i'm a big guy and have a valium every time i go in the tube because it feels so closed in. the valium simply relaxes you, the original mothers little helper. when the mri concert begins i just imagine that hendrix comes back to life and i get a preview of the new cutting edge techniques in music he is working on, it's great.

Re: Closed MRI
This goes for any medical procedure I have... as long as it doesn't hurt, I'm okay. A MRI doesn't hurt so it's more annoying than anything else. Just something else I have to do. If pain is involved, that's a whole other story.

When I have to get a MRI, I ask for a bandana / towel / eye mask to cover my eyes. That way I can't see how close to the machine I am.Cowzzandpawzz wrote: ↑Mon Oct 11, 2021 6:57 pmI have a closed mri scheduled. Already went through it half way freaked out.

Re: Closed MRI
When I had one, I requested "country"--should have specified CLASSIC country.
Hank Williams or Patsy Cline . . .
Contemporary ain't even country anymore.

Re: Closed MRI
To OP - You mentioned asking about an open MRI. Unless there was some legit medical reason (which you would verify independently), DEAMAND an open MRI or go elsewhere. Put the monkey on their back to convince you that open is the only way to go.
In my case, the provider said "the team" that is qualified to do the work is located only in XXX location which has only open MRI. The response "that won't work for me, what other options can you offer?" Turns out there was a facility about 25 miles away that had an open MRI machine. They sent the MRI results to the XXX location for the specialist doc to read it. I think the drive is a reasonable trade-off.

I took a Xanax and my impression was "Wow, that's no big deal". Not sure I would have agreed without the Xanax. BUT, it was WAY too loud to possibly fall asleep.

Re: Closed MRI
The closed MRI system allows for finer resolution than the open MRI system. Due to the technology used, a closed MRI is able to capture the insides of the human organism with the finest precision. Specialists can have a clearer picture of the object and the resulting diagnosis is therefore more precise. Open MRI images are less precise and can even be fuzzy.
MRI is traditionally measured in Tesla. The higher the Tesla levels, the clearer the images you get. While closed MRI is capable of .35 to 1.5 Tesla, open MRI produces only .2 to .3 Tesla. Thus a closed MRI system produces higher levels of power and is capable of getting much clearer images than an open MRI.

Re: Closed MRI
I have had nearly 20 MRI's and I like them less and less. The longest continuous MRI was over 90 minutes when they did both my thoracic and lumbar spine with and without contrast; that was an awful experience. I have had one so called open MRI, and it was open 360 degrees, but the magnet was still just inches from my face. I had to look straight up and keep still so the openness met nothing. The last couple MRIs I started wearing a sleeping mask which really helps. It is mask that I wear every night for sleep and it does not have any metal so no problems there.
It sure would be nice if someone could event a MRI that is quick as a CT scan. That invention would make someone very, very rich.
