New Mask Recommendation - Sore Teeth

Post by smurfyabs » Tue May 08, 2012 8:39 am

I loosened my nasal mask as much as possible but am still having pain in my top front teeth. I know it's not my tongue because of my bite (top teeth over lap bottom). They start to hurt half way through the night and become unbearable around 4 am. Just four nights and I cant sleep without the mask but once my teeth start to hurt I cant sleep with it either!

Should I wait it out or request a new mask from my DME? If I need a new mask what would you recommend?

Try a sleepweaver.
Some others will rave about it;
--I have not yet made the leap.

It sounds like your mask is way to tight. Before you do anything else, take the directions for the mask and re read the mask fit section. I had a problem like this and once I re read the directions the problem went away.

On another thought it could be the shape of your jawline. For me, I had a problem getting the mask sealed because I have a mustache.

If the mask is the wrong size that could also cause this problem

I found a guide last night for fitting on the Resprionics website with pictures. I had my husband assist me in following each step. It was fitting pretty lightly but the part over my upper lip wouldn't get any looser. Still painful this morning. I'm just weird I guess!

You said the part on your upper lip wouldn't get any looser. Did you mean it wouldn't loosen up any more or you couldn't loosen it up without it appearing to be too loose?

One of our other forum members also has some significant tooth pain.. Mentioned here
viewtopic.php?f=1&t=76329&p=706691#p706691

I would be talking to the DME about a different mask that didn't put any pressure on that area.
Can you use nasal pillow mask? They need very little tension and apply minimal pressure to that area.
The Aloha is the latest and getting rave reviews. Minimal pressure on the teeth if any.
Then there are the full face mask which cover the nose and mouth and totally eliminate the pressure over the top front teeth.

I leave the straps to what feels too loose but once the machine is on it expands to fill the gap blocking any leaks without feeling tight. If I loosen it more I have leaks...maybe not enough to hurt my therapy but enough to be annoying.

I almost wonder if its just a sensitively that I will adjust to. I will continue to go to bed with it for a few days (and until I get a different mask if need be) to see. I've only had it since Thursday and my teeth have only hurt two of those nights.

Thanks to pugsy for the link my forum search didn't return that.

Looking into the Aloha that headgear looks much more comfortable.

Ky insurance uses a company named Allmed who contracts a local company. Who do I call the local or AllMed?

The local provider would be the place to start I think.

I had tooth movement/discomfort from the Mirage Micro;
but my P/R Easylife nasal mask does not push on my teeth at all.
It acts like an octopus in that it 'sucks' itself onto my face.
I also feel no tooth pressure from my Swift FX nasal pillows mask.

Hello Smurfyabs

I'm the other member with teeth pain, I thought I was alone in the world

To this day I'm not sure what is the cause of the pain. For sure it's not the tooth it has no more root , I had a good exam and RXs and there is nothing wrong. No sinus infection at all.

There is only 2 possibilities left. 1) there is a nerve in the front of the jaw at the base of the nostrils which could be irritated or something like that (as per my sleep apnea specialist). It seems to be a rare problem, he told he had never seen a patient with that (I needed to try it ). He toke notes and I imagine he will inquiry about that, he is an excellent Dr.

Provably I used the nasal pillows too tight and made a problem to that nerve. Now need to use a FFM for 3 months to see if the problem disappears. That's the easiest solution my Dr. wants me to try, if this is easy what will be next So, I have been using the FFM since last Thursday and I still have sensitivity. I'm not sure if that's helping.

2) I'm clinching the teeth (Bruxism, as per the last dentist I saw at a clinical school, he is a professor). The dentist suggest to go see another dentist for a kind of bite protector, if the pain doesn't goes away. This pain started on November 2010; today it's not very strong but enough to be boring and some times it increases.

I was using a nasal pillows very tight, the moment I stopped using it the pain diminished and even disappeared for a while but it came back again. I think we provably have those nerves too close to the skin and we disturbs it easily. In my case, I could use a nasal mask (the Activa) without problem other than a feeling of having pushed my upper teeth (no pain), but I don't like that feeling I'm afraid I'm really pushing back the teeth.

If I understand well you are using a nasal mask. If you decide to try nasal pillows be very careful not to over tight the pillows, as a precaution.

I was trying nasal pillows with a chin strap and trying to relax and forget I need to keep the mouth shut while asleep. That seems to work some times, maybe the problem is the combination of Bruxism and the nerve irritation. If that's the case the FFM will not fix the problem and I will need the teeth protector (I don't remember the name of that thing in English).

If I find the solution I let you know, if you find a solution let me know All the best !

Rosie

p.s the first time I ask about my problem here in the forum some members answered they had pain problems because of the same mask too tight (Headrest). They deconstructed the mask (a transformation we make to the Headrest) and used it with less pressure against the nostrils. In that time I was using the mask as it is without deconstruction, then I deconstructed it and the pain decreased but didn't disappear; it makes me think there is a relation between the pain and the pressure against the nostrils.

I am using the Resmed softgel nasal mask and have the same problem. I have adjusted it every way possible. If I wear it less than 5 hours it seems to be ok. Any longer and my top front teeth hurt. I have tried some full face masks and have had no luck. This is the first mask that I have had some success with so I have been tolerating the tooth pain. I am on the list to try a Sleepweaver and see if I have any luck. I don't have any advice to give but wanted to let you know you aren't alone.

When i use my mirage softgel I get a similar problem. I have the same tooth problem with the front teeth going over the bottom teeth and my jaw dropping back. Its not really the teeth that hurt its more the inside of the top lip as the teeth get pushed into it.In the long run if the mask gives too many problems its a flag to replace the pillow.

Thanks for the replies to let me know I'm not alone or crazy!

Last night I adjusted the arm to tilt it down, moving the pressure to the bridge of my nose and completely off of the lip. I tilted until it almost wasn't sealed on the lip. The good news is that my teeth did not hurt this morning, which explains why they didn't hurt the first couple nights since that's how I had it then. However, the pressure on my nose was very close to unbearable. I say close because I eventually did sleep and I sleep so good and deep with this! Anyway, before and after sleep I felt like it was cutting into my skin. Plus that someone has their finger on my nose feeling all night.

Anyway, I did call my DME yesterday but the guy that handles that stuff was on his day off. So I left a message and if I don't hear back from them by the afternoon, I'll call again. I think even though my teeth didn't hurt, it's still not as comfortable as it could be.

I have the same problem when I use my old Flexset Gel nasal mask. The problem was completely solved when I got my fantastic Swift FX nasal pillow mask. If you must have a nasal mask, I got a Mirage FX nasal mask recently, that mask does not push on the teeth at all and is extremely comfortable to wear.
