S9 Autoset not delivering correct pressure
S9 Autoset not delivering correct pressure
Hi All -
I'm hoping you can help me determine if I need to send it off for service, or what might be incorrect. For a while now my wife has told me that I've been snoring with my mask on at night. I've chalked it up to me falling asleep before the machine has finished ramping, but this was shown to not be the case. I changed the settings so that the minimum pressure was 13cmh20 and the max was 16 (my titrated pressure from several years ago was 13 - I had the machine set to use 11-16 as the range before this) - this made no difference, as the machine still is not delivering even the minimum pressure. Next step is to change it from auto to just deliver 13cmh20 in straight CPAP mode, but I'm not really sure that this is going to do the trick.
I temporarily switched back to an older machine that I had - a respironics system one - and the felt pressure was immensely different! Unfortunately that machine crapped out a couple nights ago, so I am back to the semi-non functioning S9.
What is odd about the S9 is that if I strap on the mask and do the mask fit test, it will blow LOTS of air - far more than I am getting during therapy - so I know that this isn't something mechanical with the machine, but rather it isn't actually determining therapy pressure correctly.
I use a full face mask - a F&P Simplus.
Thanks for your help!
Chris

What were the settings on the Respironics machine?rcs914 wrote:I temporarily switched back to an older machine that I had - a respironics system one - and the felt pressure was immensely different!

How was this "shown to not be the case'?rcs914 wrote:I've chalked it up to me falling asleep before the machine has finished ramping, but this was shown to not be the case.

no, the next step is to load the data into sleepyhead, and look at the pressure graph, and mask pressure graph.rcs914 wrote:Hi All -

see what it thinks it's delivering.
then you could rig up a manometer and check the pressure.

Because my snoring, with the mask on, was waking up my wife in the middle of the night.Midnight Strangler wrote:How was this "shown to not be the case'?rcs914 wrote:I've chalked it up to me falling asleep before the machine has finished ramping, but this was shown to not be the case.

Re: S9 Autoset not delivering correct pressure
put your thumb over the end of the hose, and turn on the machine, make sure you don't hear air leaking, like from a not well closed humidifier lid, or if the inner gasket from the humidifier has come loose and causing a huge leak.
what do your leak rates look like from sleepyhead?

Re: S9 Autoset not delivering correct pressure
So here's a screen cap of my statistics. I do not have any leaks within the system itself. AHI has been poor over the last couple nights, but when going back to when I last used the machine, my AHI was very low - and that would have been when I was snoring and waking up my wife, so I'm not really sure how much the numbers can be trusted.

You S9 is set to the following:
Current Settings PS 4.0 over 10.6-18.0 (cmH2O) - Resmed S9 VPAP Auto w/h5i Humidifier - Quattro Air FFM
TNET Sleep Resource Pages - CPAP Machine Database

BTW if you post an actual daily charts rather than the statistics, you can most likely see what is going on better than just looking at the numbers...

Re: S9 Autoset not delivering correct pressure
Yes, I believe I mis-typed before. I hadn't checked it just before posting - I had last looked at it a couple weeks ago. But regardless - it isn't blowing 13.6 - 16cmh20. The felt pressure, with the same mask and hose, between the two machines is immense. You know how if you use a full face mask and your mouth comes open, it will inflate your cheeks? And the higher the pressure, the stronger this feeling is? During therapy - after the ramp - with the S9 it is barely pushing in air and inflating my cheeks. With the old System one it was a totally different story - rapid cheek inflation, much stronger felt pressure, and stronger air force out of the leak holes in the front of the mask.Krelvin wrote:You S9 is set to the following:

You can drop the cmh20, that is assumed.rcs914 wrote:But regardless - it isn't blowing 13.6 - 16cmh20. The felt pressure, with the same mask and hose, between the two machines is immense.
You can't know what it is blowing without testing. A local DME can do that easily or you can either make your own DIY Manometer or there is a simple trick to do it if you have the proper ruler and some water.
Note that the S9 and your Respironics don't start delivering pressure the same. The PR will start all at once, the S9 will start gradually.

as Den puts it: "Or, go up to the Search line and put in 'homemade manometer' and start reading."

Re: S9 Autoset not delivering correct pressure
What I am saying is that I don't believe that the data being presented here is correct. If you look back over time - say to when I last was using the machine before the last couple nights - my AHI was between .14 and .68 - and this was during the time that I was snoring loud enough with my mask on to wake my wife.

Re: S9 Autoset not delivering correct pressure
My S9 was purchased new from Second Wind CPAP, so I do not have a local DME. Looking at when I started using it, it may be possible that it is still under warranty. I would be looking at the home built manometer. Understood that they do not - however the ramp is set to start at 6 on the Respironics, and 8 on the S9. The felt pressure at 6 (after I turn it on, and then press the ramp button) is still higher than the S9 at its starting ramp pressure of 8.Krelvin wrote:You can drop the cmh20, that is assumed.rcs914 wrote:But regardless - it isn't blowing 13.6 - 16cmh20. Nope, just looked. I bought it in August of 2012.
