Hair!

Post by KSMike » Tue Apr 17, 2012 5:37 pm

I switched to a Liberty hybrid a few months ago. It's giving me the best results of any mask I've tried so far, but it has completely ruined my hair - to the point of having to wear a hat to work. Any advice? I tend to get hot when I sleep so any kind of cap might be a problem.

Can't help, but that's why bald is beautiful. Put your head under a faucet and wet it and then dry it.

Ah, a topic I know something about.

Can I ask: what exactly is going on? What is your hair texture/length like, and what are your problems in the morning? That will help us figure out some options.

For me, I have very, very thick wavy hair all the way to my tailbone. The XPAP straps used to get snarled in my curls and wake me up, even when I slept in a low ponytail. I tried buffs, which helped, but nothing was as great for me as switching to the Bella straps.

Anyway, tell us more and we'll help brainstorm!

After using the Liberty (I'm sure it'd happen with most all masks) for several weeks I was starting to see permanent mask strap marks in my hair, even after showering. I too get rather hot at night but I knew I needed some sort of cap and found these. Of course, the hair is still flattened in the morning but at least the strap pressure is spread out enough the grooves are gone.

Randy, thanks. I can't imagine wearing something like that but I may not have much choice but to try it.

Nap_ster, I have pretty thick hair, not short but not long. I have to wear the mask fairly tightly (I've tried loosening it up but all that does is cause leaks for me), so I'm getting a permanent groove or big wave right in the middle of the top of my head, mixed in with a few curls in the same area from the straps.

Squid, trust me, the thought has crossed my mind! But I really would prefer to keep my hair.

I have had this problem since I started cpap therapy. I have "ripples" on the back of my head that are caused by the straps. I have pondered a head-stocking, but haven't felt the urge to pursue it. I suspect the gals look at the ripples on the back of head, immediately notice my beautiful face... get distracted and forget the ripples.

Boy I had problems with my hair and my hair is very important to me.

One of the overlooked benefits of reading cpaptalk was to learn about these - http://www.rei.com/gear/feature/search/ ... 7Aod5DwJvw

I sleep with mine every night.

The one that Randy posted is much cheaper but I notice that it is 60% cotton. Cotton is hotter and retains moisture. The one at REI is 100% polyester microfiber which is very cool and wicks moisture. It also will last much longer than cotton and body oils wash out of it easier than cotton. I have had mine nearly three years and it looks like it will last a couple more.

The one at REI has an open end and should fit more head sizes.

Don't have an answer for you, but just wanted to commiserate. This has been an ongoing problem for me and my Hybrid with those ridiculous dents in my hair, or waking up with my hair going all the wrong ways! I can't use any strap covers or head covers because all of it makes me sweat or just flattens everything down too much. Fortunately, I work from home so I don't have to go out every day. But when I do, I either spritz with a water bottle the bad areas and dry, or use a flat iron (which obviously doesn't work if you have curly hair!).

Just too much damage and frustration. (and looking really stupid in the morning)

I'd prefer not to wear it but got tired of the grooves. The material is about as thick as a standard weight t-shirt and so far (waiting for summer) isn't too hot.

Been on the machine since the beginning of March. Have long (near waist-length), thick hair. I pull mine back into a ponytail, which I pull over the back strap on my headgear. This helps keep the whole gear in place while I sleep. The silicone top strap isn't snug enough to leave dents across the top of my head.

This is what I do with headgear now too, but it doesn't help the folks that don't have hair long enough to pull back.

Since my fiance has this issue too (medium-length hair, long enough to form grooves but too short to pull back), I've been pondering options. The cap option is one possibility, and like the buffs, they are lightweight/cool fabric.

But, if you want even *less* on your head, here's what I've been thinking about. I was toying with lining the underside of the head strap with padded tape to increase the width to about two inches, and then covering that with jersey/soft t-shirt material. I think that would be wide enough to prevent marks/grooves, but not as hot as a whole cap. And extra padding=even more comfortable! My love is working with the Bella, but if he switches to headgear, I will whip one of these up to try out. In the meantime, it might be worth trying!

Bald isn't beautiful for me that's for sure. The straps are pulling my hair out and breaking it off. My hair has never in my life looked so awful. Very depressing.

Hi guys,

I have had the same issue using Resmed Swift FX nasal pillows. My hair is thick and I developed a very noticeable crease in my hair. My hairstylist asked what was happening to my hair at one point. Even after showering and drying my hair the crease never went away. I recently saw a video of myself and that started me brainstorming for a solution. I did purchase the Bella Nasal Pillows and decided to endure the pink color LOL, but after trying for two weeks I can't get them to stay in place. My leaks became very bad with accompanying fatigue returning. I don't like the idea of sleeping with a cap on at night.

So I came up with a design solution for the Swift FX pillows and asked my wife to sew it together for me on her machine. After a redesign tweak it works great and the hair crease is gone. If anyone is interested and wants more information let me know.

Bob
